how bad do the cops get ya?

how bad do the cops get ya?

Postby bassndad [OP] » September 7th 2010, 7:00am

I understand everywhere is different. But with a 4/5 drop with mini notch how often do the police bother with not Jus lowriders but low astros? How much trouble do inspection places worry about the frame mods?
Never owning a lowered vehicle myself I'm wondering what troubles I might run into and how much might it cost?
Anyone care to share there stories to help me and others get an idea of troubles we could have aside Jus building our astro/safari ?
Thanks, J.

Is it illegal in your jurisdiction to have a lowered van?

Hey bassndad, it might help if you put your location in your information, then someone from your area might have more accurate details.

In Milwaukee, there is only emission testing. And that's only in the major cities in WI, as many northern and western cities doesn't even have that. And that testing is now only for OBDII vehicles, where they plug in to check your computer. There's no "safety" inspection so lowered vehicles wouldn't have to checked other than emissions. Of course, in winter, a lowered vehicle will have issues in the snow, and in the summer you'll be encountering potholes & construction caused by the winter weather. So a lowered vehicle would not be ideal here as a daily driver. I really don't see to many intentionally lowered vehicles here, other than at car shows.

I've had 2 lowered vehichles an s10 and my van and never had trouble with cops but i didn't keep either one low very long

And we dont have any kind of inspection all i do is go down to the tag office pay $20 and some change and get the sticker for my tag. I dont even have to be in the van to get it

EDIT: They send a reminder in the mail about 2 weeks before your tag expires and it has a paper in there you can send back with a check or money order and they'll send you your regesistration through the mail

I live in staunton Virginia. My buddy has had a few tickets for his s10 and again for his integra but cops don like the ricer group around here. But as far as a van goes when its lowered on some nice 18s will it stand out like the trucks and cars. Cause I've never seen one in person

I drive the Astro everyday, never had a problem being lowered, and they are really strict here. Only thing they didn't like when I went to get it inspected was tinted taillights. We have been driving Astro's totally pimped out since 1986. Only time we ever got pulled over was when I was a kid and my dad had the speedo buried on the drive home from the beach... took the cop 5 minutes to catch up. And look how subtle my paint is on my new van..

i noticed in my local town once the cops see you enough and figure out you live there they dont bother you with a lifted or lowered vehicle. just dont go through the random safety inspections. and my county, will, along with cook which is mostly the city chicago, the cops dont bother they have better things to do. usually the rookie new local cops will hassle someone a bit until a superior shuts him down and he switches cities. i noticed the north part of illinois sucks. the cops are not so nice in the famous town of woodstock. tightasses. but usually window tints, loud muffler and lifted/lowered on a nice vehicle wont get messed with. but it all depends on what the officer feels like that day. and if its quota time.

Never had a problem with mine. Lowered 2/3 with 18" low profiles and body kit. It was my daily driver and the guys at the inspection station would always ask the same thing: "are ya sure this is an 89'?? sure looks and runs better than the new ones!!"

The only issue that anyone around here has as it relates to ride height is if the vehicle's bumper is too high...and then even at that if your license plate hangs down to the maximum height, and as long as it is attached to the bumper, it's legal.

I have driven my 3/4 dropped C1500 extended-cab pick-up (1995) from California to Florida and as far north as North Carolina without any hassles. It also has loud mufflers and dark tint. It's my opinion a mild custom is not usually hassled unless you do something to draw attention.

Wouldn't the simple answer be to look up your state's vehicle code and see if what
you want to do is legal?

Then if it is illegal, it's not a case of "how bad the cops get ya". It's
simply illegal.

Soooooooo, here is the question of the day.

Is it illegal to tie up your horse in a handicap spot in front of a Home Depot?????.

Well that is a easy answer-------It all depends on if the horse is lame or not.

here in Buffalo, the only time low vehicles get pulled over is if there's dark tint, high speeds, or other movign violations... in NY we have yearly safety and emissions inspections - i have my NYS Inspector's license, and i can tell you this - if a lowered vehicle comes in with the body drop (cut frame) i don't have any problmes as long as it was put together with some sense of safety... no frame rot, holes, or stuff like that...

Well, if you were to get just ONE ticket for an illegal veh mod, wouldn't
that be enough to ruin your day? You'd have to deal with the $$$ ticket, then
you'd have to "un-mod" the mod in order to re-register it.

In the bigger picture, I have a clear ethics conflict with the attitude
"Well plenty of stuff is illegal and nothing is done about that so go ahead and
violate the law you don't like".

And in the still bigger picture, I'd ask once again (3rd time?)
"Is it illegal in the area where the orig poster is at?"
The answer to that question will render the solution either
1) Moot (if it's not illegal)
or
2) An ethics question that only the person intending to
violate the law can answer.

I generally look at those kinds of ethics questions as
"What would you teach your kids to do in a case like that?"

" ... Is it illegal to tie up your horse in a handicap spot in front of a Home Depot?????..."

In Arizona you can ride/tie up your horse anywhere that vehicles are
allowed to travel, including freeways and parking lots. Horses have
the right of way over all other means of transport here. I'm not sure
if hitching up at a handicaped spot is a violation.
