Hello from Falcon Colorado

Postby PrairieDog [OP] » June 5th 2021, 3:20am

Hello All,

I'm john. My wife and I picked up this '96 Astro and brought it to our home on the prairie East of Colorado Springs a little over a week ago. I've wanted an Astro/Safari for some years now, but recently her battle with MS has confined her to a powered wheelchair and we could use a way to get that ~400lb piece of equipment around with us while keeping it out of the weather.
Image

The 4.3 has a bad knock and squeal from the bottom end so we got it cheap. I know there are various methods for engine removal on these and every owner has their preference for their own reasons. This is the route I went:
Image

To get the subframe out from under the hoist I took the wheel off and rolled the disk across some boards on the hoist legs:
Image

Once I got that side across, I picked it back up with the floor jack under the A arm, scooted it until the tire and wheel would clear the hoist legs, and put the wheel back on:
Image

From there it was clear sailing.
Image

This site is a great resource and I hope to contribute over time.

Regards.

Welcome aboard.
That's a big first step. Going with a rebuild or full on V8 swap?
Just a quick heads up. Do not rely on the dash grab handle for much assistance for getting her in/out of the van. They are not solidly mounted (plastic mounts) and will break easily. I am sure something can be made to securely mount to the body and provide much safer access.

Welcome!

These vans are definitely a great base for a wheelchair vehicle. I never understood why more wheelchair conversion companies used car-based minivans instead of Astro/Safari vans.

And look at that nice purty radiator support.
A small suggestion. Get some Eastwood Internal Frame Coating and treat the inside of those box tubes. They rust from the inside out. The rockers and frame rails also suffer from the internal rotting.

For the money your putting into getting it running. May as well make it last also.

Since I've got it this far I've got to add the other two cylinders. I plan to go check out a donor vehicle this week.

Thank you for your intuitive thoughts on the grab handles. I was unaware and will be sure to make provisions when the time comes.

Greatly appreciated.

Thanks for making me feel welcomed. I've read quite a bit of your insights in the previous few weeks and I obviously can't claim full credit. I simply got it to the point of "Now what am I going to do?", scratched my head, and improvised with what I had on hand.

After getting it out in the open, I threw together a leg and swiveling caster that bolts to the transmission mount, something in retrospect I could have done first but was probably more motivated to see it in the clear at the time:
Image

Now I can roll the whole assembly into the garage and work on it more conveniently.

Valuable input & agreed.

I'm really trying to not turn this into a year-and-a-half "project" by breaking everything down to its individual components (something I'm all too inclined to do), but now is definitely the time for something like that. It will never be as easy to get good coverage as it is right now. I've had good success in the past with RustSeal from KBS Coatings, a phosphoric acid treatment for rusty metal and then sealant similar to the POR-15 application/kit, but am not committed to any singular product. I might just try something else if only for the education.

One other thing while I'm here (in the "New Member Intro" post) :
In the last few weeks while lurking I've seen a few instances on moderator-edited posts citing a "Rule21 Violation". The edit is linked but just routes me to the index.php Home page. I've been through the FAQ page, but in the interest of not overstepping anything I can't for the life of me find the Forum Rules. Searching "Rules", "Violation", etc brings up about 528 posts without much relevant on the 1st few pages.

It's probably as plain as the nose, but if someone could point me towards it, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thank you.

to go non LS v8 you will need a custom oil pan unless you lift the engine/trans. for LS V8 send a pm to copperfiremist to get his take on the swap.

Yeah a lift is the easiest fix for awd v8 conversions but may make your uses more difficult.
