Introduction

Postby 87Astro43hsc [OP] » August 3rd 2013, 7:15pm

Hello,

I am from Florida and have an 87 Astro 2WD w/4.3L engine and about 293,000 miles on it. Got it from a friend of a friend about a year ago. It had been sitting in garage for about a year before that after owner had died. After replacing a dead battery, it would turn over but wouldn't start. I squirted some regular unleaded fuel into TB and it started up, caught fire, turned it off - put fire out (leaves and trash sitting on the intake manifold clead them out) and then towed it home and it sat for about 10 months. Have been working on it a couple months now.

I have checked fuel pump relay, refurbished TB (with kit from Autozone), replaced fuel pump (should have done that 1st - started right up after replacement), added break fluid (was really low - actually should have done that 1st), and then new tires. Drove it for a couple months and then it caught fire again. Fuel had leaked out of fuel line where somebody (ok, it was me) had not tightened the hose clamp on the fuel line to TB (that somebody had cut out to check for fuel - ok it was me again) and started on fire. This time because it took time to remove the doghouse the fire melted the coil housing and a few assorted vacuum hoses. Didn't seem like anything major at the time - except it wouldn't start. Replaced coil, coil to distributor wire, and vacuum hoses. Engine finally started up without touching the gas pedal. Yeah, I fixed it.

Drove Astro onto ramps to bleed brakes (because the Brake light stayed on and I should have done that 1st) and when I tried to start engine it wouldn't start. Long story short - replaced distributor (with pickup coil), rotor, and distributor cap. Wouldn't start without fully depressing gas pedal. That's where I am now. It will start without gas pedal once it's warmed up, but not when cold. Guessing it's lo temp cooloant sensor (that's the code the computer gives). and am ready to replace that.

Look forward to posting pictures and asking questions.

Thanks for the informative/helpful site.

Thanks ProStreet_LS1, RECox286, 94 Van Guy and SilverBullet1997. Here it is three years later and I realized it's time to say something again. I found the information at astrosafari.com quite helpful. But still I drove my poor '87 Astro til it died. Amazingly, it did not die a firey death, but instead went out with a whimper. Anyhow, it's good to be back. thanks again for the great site. Sincerely, Carl

Yeah, a new (to me) 2005 GMC Safari since January 2016. It hasn't caught on fire once (yukyuk). I had a weird electrical problem which finally ended up blowing a fuse. A direct short between a small wire from the alternator/battery to the starter. The insulation had dry rotted to the point it welded itself to the oil/transmission dipstick tube(s). It's running good, except for a radiator leak (which I just replaced). Will tackle a power steering leak when I finally track it down. Other than that, it's just one 4.3 after another. Thanks for asking.

Welcome back - and congrats on the wire problem find. Those can be pretty frustrating.

And congrats on the '05, of course ;)

Welcome back! And, just FYI, 94 Van Guy passed away awhile back. Sigh. But still a great bunch of people here! Best of luck with the "Gen III" van.
