Postby deafman [OP] » December 21st 2016, 3:49am

I am a new member but I was lurking for months.
This forum is great.
'' Deafman '', you gussed it - I'm Deaf. :eusa-shifty:
I am in the center of coastal Texas.
I got a 2002 White Astro LS RWD 143,000 miles for $1400.
It belonged to a university mostly so it may have been taken care of.
It came with many standard features :
Sun baked dash with the after market cover.
Fuel gauge set on empty, like my forum status.
Outer edge of front tires worn.
ABS light was on and kicking in a bit at slow speeds.
Wheel sensors were not really dirty but I cleaned them.
I was going to try the solder trick.
But when I went under It looked like it had recently been messed with.
Kind of felt like the PO may have already tried a good bit to fix the ABS.
So I pulled the fuse and taped the brake light.
It passed inspection, stoked.

Sorry I don't have a pic of the van.
I am very behind the times on all tech & don't have a smartphone.
So forgive my posts for lacking links and pictures.
I also tried to mark myself on the foogle map by address and dragging-- failed.
Yes, as a matter of fact I did live in a hut a good while.

PS I had a 1961 VW camper that was stolen a long time ago. :crying:
Astros kind of remind me of VWs before they got more scarce and expensive.
They made them a long time.
And there are plenty of donors for parts.
There was the Idiot's guide to keeping your Volkswagen alive.
But I imagine if there had been a forum back then, there would be a lot more VWs now.
It's nice to know you have support.

Hey DM, welcome aboard! We are all mad here, not to fret. You are off to a good start, we always recommend tons of reading before asking the questions, so you are starting at an advantage.

(cracking knuckles)
OK... ABS- good start, but I vote to pull the pump anyways and touch up all thru-hole solder joints (PM for guidance if needed), couldn't hurt and its basically free to try.

Tire wear: Start with Idler Arms, high wear/ high neglect item. You can do before or after alignment, doesn't matter. Dirt cheap, Moog is OEM quality. http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php ... 55&jsn=476
The alignment shop should be able to tell you about the condition of everything else, like ball joints and tie rod ends.

Gas gauge: New one for me, check wires, fuses and connections. If you are a contortionist you can feel around the top of the tank for loose wires, there are 2 connectors on top.

Pictures- play around a bit, you'll figure it out.

Again, welcome to the big show!

Everyone reads you loud and clear around here. Welcome aboard!
Just because the ABS looks like it has been worked on does not mean it was done right. It is worth the effort to double check to make sure.

BTW: If your not careful. You will be researching lift kits soon! The madness is contagious around here!!

Re: tire wear. Get an alignment check first. Good shop will be able to tell all the parts you need. Replace them then get full alignment. Wimpazz is right about getting idler arms. They have a high failure rate on Astros. Moog last the longest.
Let us know as it goes along.
