European Astro

Postby Speedsmile [OP] » July 6th 2011, 10:37pm

Hello guys,

Let me introduce myself, I'am speedsmile (Maarten IRL), and I live in Netherlands. Currently I have the opportunity to acquire a 1997 Astro via the mother of my girlfriend. To cut a long story short, she wants to get rid of it. However, the van is located in Poland! (another long story). I recently had a look at it, and it seems quite fine. Fixed a new battery and started up within 5 seconds of cranking after three years of total standstill..not bad... :layrubber: Here it is... Luckily it has been standing in a parking garage so the weather couldn't get a hold on it...

The plan is to do a sort of European road trip and drive it to NL somewhere in September and then store it at my parents place, which have more than enough space (farm). Then I'm not sure, but we'll see, probably use it as a trip/vacation van for a few years, possibly import it and build it to a camper.. :driving:

There a few things with the van which might need to be fixed:
1. Passenger side lock is broken due to a failed brake in attempt. :screaming:
2. Three lug nuts are missing from three different wheels (??), no idea how this came to be, seems some mechanic left them off because of bad thread.
3. Some rust on the underbody. Mostly not too serious yet, but needs treatment. There is only 1 or 2 spot which I'm concerned about. I will open a topic about it tomorrow...so you guys can give me some expert advice

1) You can replace the lock only on that side, or you can buy a set with new keys - I'm pretty sure www.rockauto.com has the set (and they ship internationally).

2) The lugnuts and studs are easy....get replacement studs, knock out the old ones with a BFH (big _____ hammer), then push the new ones through from the back and run the lugnut up tight with an impact wrench. Done ;)

3) Rust is easy. I use Loctite Extend - in the bottle, not the spray can - and put on 3 coats. After it cures, you can sand and paint it anything you want, but it cures black. It turns the rust into epoxy primer.

Oh, yeah....Welcome! There are several other members here from The Netherlands, so there's plenty of help available.
