Finally committed to buying the van: Hello!

Postby mutable [OP] » May 4th 2020, 2:37am

Well I've been posting a little bit the last few weeks as I've tried to hone in all my must-haves, nice-to-haves, and don't-needs, and as of this afternoon it's looking pretty good. Hope to have the sale done by tomorrow and will be flying out to Florida to visit with some family and drive it back to California later next week.

So yes, anyway, hello.

I live in Berkeley, California across the water from San Francisco. My main things are biking and rock climbing. This past winter I hit the road and to bum around in Texas and found the size of my car — a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek — to be quite limiting. After a bunch of research into vans I decided the size and reliability and community around the Astro/Safari hard to beat!

Finally found a low mileage 2000 Safari, LT package with everything but a blender.

Big plans to make this into a camper/adventure van to road trip out to new crags (not to mention the friends I have neglected to visit). I'll probably lift it at least a few inches to match the clearance of my Crosstrek, nothing crazy though. Thinking of also doing a 4x4 conversion. Most controversially, I'm considering putting a fiberglass top on to get a bit more headroom, but I won't go through with that for a while. Otherwise, I'm intending to pull out the rear seats, all of the trim up to the front seats, tear up the carpet, put down insulation and sound proofing, frame the chassis and start building some furniture to comfortably sleep and work in the vehicle.

I have some experience TIG welding and think it would cool to design a roof rack with ladder as well. Currently I only work on bike frames so it would be cool to get some hands-on experience with cars.

Honestly, it will be a multi-year project and I'm hoping to do as much of it as I can myself. Nice to meet you all :)

all of that

it's a beautiful commuter right now, and looks to be a great foundation for vanning. i didn't see mileage?

a guy in oregon, i met him on the "the van that can" FB group, has this. i figured you won't mind examples.

73k mileage. Going to add another 3000 on the trip back out to California

That rear ladder is inspired! I hadn't thought about a design to accommodate the dutch doors! Really really cool and worthy of consideration for sure.

RE bike work, I made a bike frame last year to build into a single speed and I've done a rack modification here and there! I haven't any pictures at the moment

I am guessing the hinges on the hatch can handle the weight on one side w/ the ladder and a trim female making her way up there.

Or do I speak too soon? We will never know... unless you do it too.
