Hellooo!

Postby Gabtrid [OP] » June 14th 2020, 8:15pm

After owning roughly 70 something vehicles I am the proud owner of a van for the first time in my short life! Before heading out on a few day trek with a bud I had dropped an $800 bid on a 2005 Astro. Well, after some mishaps we decided to call it a day early & headed to the nearest town with a brewery. As I hit cell service I learned that I had been the winning bid! So here I am introducing myself & the rig. A 2005 AWD Astro with 188k on the clock.

Initially the driver door was the only one that unlocked and opened, but after ~an hour with the aid of some trim tools & lube all doors are functioning as they should. The dutch doors are leaky, as I've read is common, though I believe it to be due to a satellite antenna that was run under it. That will soon be remedied & the seal will be reglued to hopefully keep the moisture out.

My idea for this van is a weekender build for my outdoor hobbies that could double as a back up residence if my current renting situation falls apart during this crazy societal climate.

The shocks are longtime blown & I guess that means I'll be putting a Journeys lift on it soon since I'll already be mucking around in the suspension.

I have started stripping the body kit away as a couple of pieces were already missing & they just collect dirt and moisture anyway. The van was missing a radio deck so I pick one up for less than a 6 pack of Pbrs & slapped it in.

After that, who knows? No signs of timing or water pump ever being done. Resolder the ABS conteoller? Start stripping the interior? Wheels & tires? Evetually a roof box & ladder? Would like to do a swivel passenger seat. Likely to go selectable 4wd. If I end up liking the lifestyle & vehicle I will certainly build a sbc for it once the ol vortec 6 pops.

I have a few years as a tech & most of my life tinkering/building as a rural ag boy.

Would love any suggestions on anything from maintenance to building if folks are keen on sharing knowledge.

Cheers from another poor PNWer

Welcome to you from all of us here in N. Ky.

Don't ya' just wonder what that PO was thinking on some of these hair-brained mods.
.

Well, after all... what would Banacek say ?... Anyone that condones the actions of the American People during the Storming of the Capitol are as complicit as the Assholes themselves.
But no way does this let the Democrats or the MSM off the Hook.

DAMN! For $800 looks like a SUPER NICE SCORE!
Pictures certainly look nice! (photos..you're off to a good start..lol)

They all need little things... no big deal.

With all the vehicles you had in your life.. unknown if any were vans.
I've owned (and own) cars and vans... and NOTHING beats a van! IMO.

Sounds like you've already got a nice head-start on what you want and plan to do.
You're in the right place!

WELCOME FROM SOUTH FLORIDA!

great deal on a running van !!!
good luck with removing that blasted GM cladding adhesive !
i used this 3M stuff & wooden tongue depressers to scrape with - got it off without messing up the paint but it took TIME!
