lurks-a-lot finally joined

Postby foxfire [OP] » October 22nd 2020, 1:44pm

Been perusing around these parts for some time and finally decided to sign up. Even pulled the most irritating newb move and posted a for sale before an introduction. I finally got some time (laid up after knee surgery) and here i am to redeam myself.

So here goes...

Hi, I'm Josh. I live in Wisconsin. And i have a thing for customizing slightly outdated vehicles.

On my third van...first was an '05 2WD cargo i used for work (maintence for public housing). White creeper van, ladder rack, bins in the back, you know the type. Kept getting mistaken as the cable guy.

When my kiddo was born (he's 8 now) it got to be too much stuffing him in the back of my 2 door Jeep Cherokee, and i liked my work van so much i decided to get one for the family adventure vehicle.

Bought this '03 AWD from a chicken farmer who used it for delivery...the decals sure got attenion:

Its for sale, btw... :teasing-signhere:

Once i got the farm smell out, used it as daily driver, tow rig, and weekend base camp for dualsport motorcycle events i frequent (I'll get a 'camperization' post up soon).

It lasted to 227000 miles with only regular maintence and simple repairs. Great van...but the rust was getting bad, so i started hunting for a cleaner version. Drove 14 hours to pick up this nice '04 AWD Safari:

Only 117000 miles, little rust. Been going through everything...and its needed quite a bit. Brakes all around, front drive hubs, u-joints, and i just started on a full ignition tune up. Front/rear sway bars and shocks next.

Exterior custom bits so far:

I much preferred the Astro grille over the Safari, and having both on hand i decided to swap. Being a purist, i couldnt leave the bowtie:

The deep dish ProComp wheels and sticky Pirelli tires it came with were cool and all...but in a 1996 Trukin' magazine kind of way (also for sale):

I purposely sought out a late model six bolt van with the intention of acquiring some 17" GMC Sierra wheels for it. The right deal came up a couple weeks ago, and i got them wrapped in 225/65/17 Toyo Open Country AT3 rubber. Also cranked up the torsion bars to stock spec (po had it riding super low).

Thats about it so far. Have some ideas I'd like to pursue...roof rack, maybe some paint details. Been kicking this idea around (pardon my primitive editing skills):

That's sig worthy right there!

I hope you got it aligned after cranking the bars, right?

I like the black between the windows. It makes the vans look longer. I was gonna do that but then AstroWill showed me the 50/50 micro perf window coverings. I'll get to it sometime....

I prefer the GMC grille in your pic. I do like those old wheels too. If you weren't in flyoverland we prolly woulda made a sale already. Welcome!

Havent done alignment yet...but its on the list. Idler arm has a touch of play, and id like to get that replaced first. She pulls nice and straight for now, though.

I mentioned it being a tow rig, and camper for dualsport motorcycle events.

Heres some of the toys it tows around (notice the theme; all are customized, slightly outdated vehicles...each with a cult-like following in their respective genres)

FB_IMG_1603380251343.jpg

2005 DR650

My 50/50 dualsport. Mods include '97 plastics, Clarke tank, Racetech suspenders front and rear, pumper carb from a Yamaha quad, full FMF exhaust, Renazco seat, second wheelset for supermoto...and a whole bunch of other goodness.

FB_IMG_1603380237013.jpg

2003 DL1000

The 80/20 adventure touring bike. Custom paint, full Staintune exhaust, Ohlins shock, Power Commander, custom seat, two wheelsets (knobbies and adv touring)...and lots more. Threw the front cam chain a while back, so recently bought a crashed out '05 to swap the motor from...hopefully getting that done this winter.

FB_IMG_1603380170560.jpg

1997 DR350

The 20/80 woods weapon. Work in progress (slow build). So far its got a whole bunch of unnecessary weight removed, complete RM125 front end, dirt model shock, Clarke tank, pumper carb, second wheelset with studded tires for ice...and, of course, a bunch of other details. Motor seized up at an event this summer...still gotta crack it open to see whats what.

Welcome!

I hate the Chevy grille - it looks soccer mom to me - so I put a Safari grille on my Astro. To each his own.

Nice find on the van, though - 117k miles is nothing.

The ol' shorty bus/chicken coupe/adventure wagon moved on to its new home today. We put a little over 50,000mi on it over the last 6+ years...at a cost of $1500. It served us well.
