Hello from Kansas

Postby bender [OP] » July 28th 2009, 12:47am

Hi I'm Tim and I have a 1997 GMC Safari SLT. It was bought new by my parents and given to me shortly after it turned 200,000 miles. My parents were nervous about driving the van cross country with that many miles and were going to donate it to a local charity. I asked them if I could have it because my beat '81 Chevrolet pickup was using almost as much oil as gas not to mention no A/C and broken power steering. They agreed and in October 2008 I became the second owner. It currently has 216,000 and a few weeks ago completed a 3500 mile trip from Kansas to California with no problems. The only modifications I have made is to change the wheels, and remove the exterior badges and striping to give it a cleaner look. I am thinking of lowering it a bit, maybe 2" and definitely will replace the grille because the chrome is peeling off. I keep it washed and waxed often as it is one of the few vehicles I have had with good paint and I want to keep it that way. Mechanically it is in desperate need of a front suspension rebuild since it still has all original bushings and ball joints and clatters/squeaks a lot. The engine still runs really well though with the only major work ever done being a new intake manifold gasket. Hopefully with good maintenance this van should last another 100,000 as many of them seem to do.

Welcome! Pretty sweet Astro...

Just one recommendation on front suspension components: Moog. Problem Solver for the idler arms, specifically.

What wheels did it have before? Just noticed in your sig that it is rwd. The reason I was asking is that your van is a twin of mine except for the dutch doors, mine has the factory chrome mags. I have never seen another one the same two tone colour scheme slt and all. Most of them here are awd because of the climate.

I think it was around 150,000-175,000 miles. I don't remember exactly.

It had factory aluminum wheels in a brushed type finish, not chrome. When we bought the van there were three total in that color sheme on the lot and one was an identical twin to ours. We actually test drove its twin and bought this one because it had less miles on it. I think it had like 2 miles on it at delivery. It's twin used to be a fairly common site aroung our town and we accidentally tried to get into it once after a football game. The twin van has been gone for a while so mine is the only one around us in this color now.
