Greetings fellow safarians

Postby rich69 [OP] » October 5th 2009, 3:44am

Two years ago I was in the market for a better vehicle. Found one I fell in love with.
A 2003 GMC safari 4.3L AWD.
Last year I put 20,000 miles on it criss crossing the country side. Twice!
This year, I decided to add on a small travel trailer. Well that hasn't worked out to well.
Towing the trailer my fuel mileage dropped from 24mpg to 8mpg.

Soooooo. I've been thinking of several options on getting more power.
One of those options is simply swapping engines. As I have learned that the 4.3L engine is nothing more than a chopped down 350 short block. From what I've been seeing and reading on the internet, this isn't that big of a problem.

As the Astro van is basically the same thing and uses the 350.
I have found a place in Atlanta that has a turnkey crate engine at a reasonable price.
But there are some things I need to know about BEFORE I get involved into this.
I realise first of all that the engine mounts will most likely be different. So what happens here? What all needs to be done with them?

Any mods to the tranny? The engine I am considering is a 400hp unit. Will I need to upgrade the tranny as well?
:layrubber:
What other little odds and ends should I be looking at?

How much time am I looking at?
:feedback:

Thanks.

Welcome to the site.

That seems like a lot of mileage to loss over a small trailer. How heavy is it? Has service been regularly performed?

If you want to go the V8 route and haul a trailer, you really should improve the transmission.
