Icelandic Party Van

Postby BaldurK [OP] » January 9th 2010, 11:02am

Hey there, just signed up.

I own a 1989 Astro which is in about the worst condition ever. I purchased it with 4 friends of mine a year ago for the equivalent of $400. It had around 150k miles on it, and most everything on it worked. It's been used and abused for just about anything since then and some good times have been had. We're always trying to keep it in drivable condition, but in reality, I'm no mechanic and neither are my friends. We're 20 years old (like the car), most of us students. I have a thing for cars though, especially american ones (my other car is a firebird, and before that I had a wrangler). So that automatically makes me the guys who's always worried about the car.

Oh yeah and then there's the paintjob. Some previous owner put flames on it. We did the wheels. (black in the back, fireball in front)

Anyway, this car has become quite well known as a partyvan, and the stories you could tell about this van would be just endless. So we've decided not to sell or part it out, but rather to fix it up and restore it.

Anyway, the list of things wrong currently is something like this:
- Brake discs ruined.
- Rear brakes 90% gone.
- Sliding door broken. Bearings ruined and everytime someone tries to open it it falls off.
- Was broken into through the driver window. Couldn't get a replacement window so we got a really similar one out of a Nissan and glued it in place. So you can't move that one.
- Passenger window won't go up or down. Electrics shot.
- Half the interior panels in the back are missing, not really sure where they are.
- No brake lights. No idea why.
- Keeps draining itself of electricity.

What we've done so far:
- New alternator
- New battery
- New CD player (two of them actually, since the first one was stolen)
- New Hand brake cables (is that what it's called?)
- New Outer tie rods.
- Lots of audio stuff. Total 1600W, 6 speakers, 1 sub, 2 amps.
- And a million other things just to keep it going.

Don't really have any good photos of the thing, but here's one anyway

Welcome to A/S

Were a helpful bunch here. You should start with the important stuff, like, ummm, the brakes. then figure out the electrical. There's lot's of places on the internet to order parts from and I'm sure some of our European members can shed some light on the best places to get parts as far as getting them over to you.
