Long Time Reader - First Time Writer

Postby dobonski [OP] » August 15th 2010, 1:54pm

I bought my 98 Safari new in 1997, SLX with 8 pax configuration front AC. I always thought I would get rid of it when I retired. 13 years and 250,000+ miles later I am having second thoughts. It has been quite the workhorse taking our family from central IN west (sometimes multiple times) every year since we purchased it. We have been extremely lucky with her. One huge issue and many little ones that were really normal issues. After all of this time very little rust.

A new tranny at 100,000 miles but in talking to the guy who put in a rebuilt Jasper GM knew of the problem and wouldn't do anything about it.
A new fuel pump at 150,000 as a pre-emptive strike.
A throttle cable broke in the Rocky Mountains, it stuck wide open with the cruise control accelerating up a hill and the downhill side was quite a white knuckle ride!
A vacuum line shattered in the Saguaro National Park, summertime of course!
Three water pumps, two alternators, one fan clutch, numerous window motors, and doorlock actuators.
The current issues is an intermittent 402 code and I suspect I'll be putting a new catastrophic converter on her.

All in all she has been very dependable. I am thinking that with a quarter of the money a new vehicle would cost I can get her almost back to new. Probably the costliest will be paint. The hood and roof have the dreaded checkering. I can shade tree mechanic with the best of them but as a painter I make a good electrician!

I have gotten a great deal of my tricks and advice from this website. I wonder if I can get another 250,000 miles out of her?
If at first you don't succeed try again - but always remember you run the risk of being twice the failure!

Sounds like she's been real good to you. I'd recommend keeping it going as long as possible, just stay on top of that maintenance and oil changes. I usually give them the "rule of three" before I consider getting rid of them. (If I find three substantial problems in a short amount of time, I usually consider that it might be worn out.) Obviously this is only one of those, better step back and evaluate the worth of the vehicle make sure it's worth the repairs. Usually it's a better bet to just keep on your maintenance rather than buy a new vehicle. I mean you're talking about $15,000.00 for a throw away car that will probably be dead before you finish paying for it. Or, keep the one you've got and put a couple hundred dollars into it each year. Let's see a couple hundred a month (Payment) for something shiny or a couple hundred a year for something that needs touch up paint. Oh and don't forget, new cars require full coverage while the one you've paid off can survive on minimal coverage and save a bit too. In all, it's usually a better deal to keep what you have.

You can't put a pic of your odometer on the 250,000 group. So here it is (maybe).
