Sway bar shopping

Sway bar shopping

Postby smokinjoe [OP] » October 22nd 2017, 5:19am

So my sway bar is broken and I haven't had luck at JYs. I looked on rockauto but they call it a stabilizer bar and only seem to offer one by mevotech for $109

On ebay I found some from 60 something and up.

So any recommendations? Am I going to not get good results with a $70 unit compared to a $110 one?

Anyone know this?

I don't have enough info to compare the two examples you are referencing, but I can say that I use Hellwig front and rear sway bars and absolutely love them.

I replaced my front bar and added the rear with Belltech pieces. It was about $350 for both and the difference it makes in the handling is worth it.

85-05 RWD
Belltech 5428 Sway Bar Front 1 3/8" Diameter. (35mm), Solid
Belltech 5528 Sway Bar Rear 7/8" Diameter. (22mm), Solid
Belltech 9913 Sway Bar Kit, Front & Rear

Addco 772 Sway Bar Front 1 1/4" Diameter (33mm), Solid
Addco 642 Sway Bar Rear 7/8" Diameter (22mm), Solid

Hellwig 7556 FRONT Sway Bar 1 1/8" diameter (29mm), Solid
Hellwig 7534 REAR Sway Bar 3/4" diameter (19mm), Solid

Dorman 927-104 Sway Bar Front 1 1/16" Diameter (28 mm), Stock replacement, Tube

90-05 AWD
Dorman 927-103 Sway Bar Front 1 1/8" diameter (29mm), Stock replacement, Tube
Addco 316 Sway Bar Rear 7/8 in. Diameter, Solid

The thicker the bar the stiffer it will be. After that shop around for price.

So my van is a 2wd 02 LS. I don't have a rear one stock right?

Ghost thanks for the items, that sounds like something Id want to do.

Will I get worse results with non name brand stuff?

Correct, The only van that cam stock with the rear bar is the RS/GT sport model.
These are nearly impossible to find anymore.

That cheap sway bar on eBay looks like a Chinese knock off of the Dorman part.
It will likely preform as well as the stock bar. For a little while.

I have the Dorman replacement on mine, works great plus its a solid bar and won't crack like the original.

Pay cheap get cheap. Although I think they all come from China, LOL. For me it comes down to size, warranty, and overall finish. That’s where the price change is. I fear the cheaper versions will begin to rust out quickly as appossed to a known name brand that powder coats them.

I mainly chose Hellwig because I liked there gray hammer tone powder coated finish and when I was reaserching rear sway bars that company kept popping up as a good one. Now moving forward almost 5 years later my front oem sway bar snaps ( a common problem ) I ordered the matching front Hellwig bar. The rear bar still looks new, dirty but rust free.

I put the solid Dorman on my '03 AWD... HUGE improvment over the hollow stock bar. I see no reason to spend big money on a "better" name brand. I had done so years ago for one for my 1 ton van that was powder coated and it rusted just the same as the Dorman on my Astro... I live in the rust belt tho.

Part # for the mevotech?
Mevotech is fairly new In the market. I have not seen anything negative about them yet.

Thanks for the correction on the Dorman being a solid bar!
No, Dorman does not offer a rear sway bar. They only deal in OEM spec replacement parts. The RS/GT rear bar was a complicated mess for mounting. There would be little to no profit trying to reproduce it at a marketable price. Not sure it would work with steel leaf springs.

With the addition of front & rear bars with KYB Gas-A-Just shocks my van went from a wallering whale that would get a nun arrested for being drunk to straight arrow fingertip control. The rear bar really does make that much difference.

I contacted SDtrucksprings about price matching their ebay price on the rear Hellwig bar. After a nice chat session with them, they actually beat that price. Cost was $167. and will be shipped soon.

Good to know they have the hellwig kit in stock. I have been trying to purchase one for about a month and everyone says they have it in stock when I order it, but a couple of days later I get an email that they are on back order and they don't actually have any.

And 167 is cheaper then your going to find anywhere (I have been shopping)
