Converting to u bolts and top plates.

Converting to u bolts and top plates.

Postby 1lowcab [OP] » December 1st 2017, 8:45pm

Quick question, What top plate do I use for this? I have a set of wangler top plates form a junkyard (really good price) they are the same as the Crown Automotive 52006421 (thats what that part number is for).

My problem is my spring perches are juuussst a hair to wide, not wide enough to drill through them like on a fiberglass spring van but wide enough that the ubolts go through at weird angles.

Any ideas?

On your 95, did it have fiberglass springs originally or steel?

Pics to show my problem

See the spring perch in the other 2 ubolt holes

Can't drill through this as it would weaken everything.

My suggestion would be to buy the appropriately sized plates. That part number is what Will used in his signature. Maybe they cross referenced wrong?

https://sites.google.com/site/astrosafa ... pring-lift

$7 on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Crown-Automotive ... 3a64d0d139

I wouldn't grind the spring perch to make them fit without reinforcing afterwards

Right, the plate in Wills sig is a Crown Automotive 52006421 and is made to fit an 87-95 Wrangler YJ, those are the plates I got at the yard.
https://www.crownautomotive.net/Leaf-Spring-Plate-Rear/52006421.html

They must work for the fiberglass guys as the perch is wider and you can drill through but not for the steel guys as they have the narrower perch.

Heres how Will did it on his post (he had the wider perches)

I won't be grinding anything at it would weaken the perch too much and be a pain to reinforce.

I just ordered some top plates, by the measurements they gave they should fit perfectly over the perch....I hope, lol!

I'll update once I get them.

Hey, feel free to copy away. I'm just hoping it turns out good, lol!

The top plates are supposed to be here Thursday so I got started on the rearend.

Pulled out the rearend I used for testing...
IMG_20171205_172105056.jpg

And started getting my old rearend (the one with the locker) ready for the top plates.

Here are the stock holes for the clamshells
IMG_20171205_151022691.jpg

Here are the holes I drilled for 5/8 Ubolts, the holes are tight against the axle housing and spring perch.
IMG_20171205_155526234.jpg

Then for craps and giggles I wire brushed the housing and hit it with some Rustoleum.
IMG_20171205_172023151.jpg

Here are the old clamshell parts, goodbye forever crappy pieces!

IMG_20171205_165619709.jpg

All this work to get rid of this ghetto engineered, hillbilly AF, rigged up crap...it was sturdy and worked fine but looked pretty poopie.
IMG_20171205_150956054.jpg

I'll post updates when the parts come in.

They are Energy Suspension part # 9.9143R, they have them in black too. If your bumpstops are like the 2nd gen ones they will work great, I don't know how the 1st gen ones are mounted.

Here is how they mount to a 2nd gen

Re: Converting to u bolts and top plates.

Postby 1lowcab [OP] » December 8th 2017, 12:34am

Parts came in and I was busy!

Here are the top plates fresh from Amazon, part number 3F-UPLT. They are BEEFY!!!!!!

I had to open up the center hole and elongate the outer 2 holes.
The reason being is the outboard part of the axle is 2-3/4", the inboard side is 3" and I just needed a touch more room on the out board side of the plate...not pretty but I got it done.
IMG_20171207_125319966.jpg

IMG_20171207_125333027.jpg

And I got some ubolts made locally. I used 5/8 ubolts, 2 of them are 3" wide for the inboard sides and 2 of them are 2-3/4" wide for the outboard sides. You would have to measure your own length as I have an extra spring in mine plus an overload spring.
IMG_20171207_125354583.jpg

IMG_20171207_130659371.jpg

IMG_20171207_130709471.jpg

Old vs new....hefty, hefty hefty!
IMG_20171207_131427693.jpg

Then I looked at my bumpstops, they were serving no purpose way down there so I decided to make an extended mount for them so they would function again.

Got some steel
IMG_20171207_135316060.jpg

Measured it out and chopped it up.
IMG_20171207_135345889.jpg

And welded up these guys.
IMG_20171207_150349336.jpg

Welded it in place on the axle. Wish I'd of thought about this when the axle was out...would have been a lot easier!
IMG_20171207_164618681.jpg

And then installed the plates and ubolts.
IMG_20171207_172623854.jpg

IMG_20171207_172638581.jpg

Man it was nice tightening those top plates down and feeling them torque and not bend, lol!
With those beefy plates and 5/8 bolts that rearend is going NOWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I like where you are going with those bump stop lift plates. When I did my lift I just threw what was left of mine away and never looked back.

Thanks man. I was going to buy longer bumpstops but really couldn't find any long enough. So if you can't get a longer bumpstop you make a longer mount...If the mountain won't come to Muhammad... or something like that.
