New upper ball joint needs tightening

New upper ball joint needs tightening

Postby swharris [OP] » August 9th 2014, 2:34am

Finished a complete front rebuild and noticed a slight clunk on hard right turns. Opened her up and it turns out the left upper joint was not tight to spec. Upon tightening it, I could not get it to spec before the joint started to spin.

How can I tighten it without the joint spinning? BTW I tried with a jack under the a-arm and with the van on the ground...no luck. Thanks.

Make darned sure that there is no foriegn object, like grease, dirt, fingers, etc on the twe mating

surfaces BEFORE they are put together. You may even want to rough the tapers with some plumbers'

sandpaper, and then check the fit for misfit, in which case the misfitting piece will need to be changed.

It's not common, but tapers are subject to damage, especially if the joint was loose before it was taken

apart initially. It happens.

Good luck there, and keep on truck'n.
