L31 Swap questions

L31 Swap questions

Postby dcsleeperdcsleeper is online! [OP] » November 9th 2020, 12:29am

I'm researching an L31 swap. I probably won't do it til the 4.3 in my AWD forces me to.
But the 2wd Astro I have my force it sooner.
They are both 2004s.
so the pinout is said to be the same... so.
I buy an Express L31 the pcm will work as the pinouts are the same.
Does the 2002 Express have EGR? That seems to be the only 'gotcha' I have.
What year does EGR stop in Expresses?

you will need a special oil pan to fit the AWD chassis. you will also need custom motor mounts, you can get the motor mounts from https://jagsthatrun.com/. If you are going with a steel oil pan send the owner of the site I posted an email as he had a few left over I recently bought one. Good Luck! Mark

k, I called JtR.
He is offering a modified steel pan, or an insert to weld into your oil pan. Both are steel. I have an alum oil pan. What gives?

Going to have to go with steel. I guess it would be an option to get two aluminum pans and have them welded together as well, but definitely wouldn't be as cheap.

what I was getting at is: I thought they were saying to weld the steel insert into your pan.
What is: is you need to get a S10 4x4 4.3 oil pan, and then weld their insert in it.
Their already modified pan was $200 but he made an issue of the fact that they have surface rust and need to be blasted.

Yes I bought one it was rusted due to being stored in a basement I think he said. It was welded very nice I even tried shining a super brite light inside of it in a dark garage to see if any light shined through. It did not. The mounting holes will have to be redone as they were from the V6 pan. I blasted my pan then sanded it. Used an epoxy primer then painted it. As for the inside I cleaned all the rust used and air gun to blow it out then I coated the inside of the pan with oil on a rag. Then put it in a plastic bag till I was ready to install. To buy the 4.3 pan meant to go to pick n pull spend a few hours removing it $30.00, cleaning it , buying the section from JTR $40.00, then having it welded $135.00 Or buy one from JTR and clean and paint it for $200.00 The real problem is finding a 4.3 4x4 steel oil pan in decent shape. In my case it was a no brainer.
