V-8 SB400 swap and Body Swap

V-8 SB400 swap and Body Swap

Postby Porsche928gts [OP] » January 1st 2021, 11:06pm

Happy New Years everyone and sorry I have been a stranger, just been so busy with work and side work, I finally decided to retire back on Dec. 4th. Anyways, does anyone know know if I can swap a 2005 AWD chassis with a 1995 Body? I only ask since I came across a sweet 1995 Astro with 97,000 miles in excellent shape, but it's a 2wd. Also makes my life easy since 1995 and older are pre-emissions in New York. Any insight on this would be great. Thanks. Mike

Yes it can be done.
The easiest thing would be to take everything from the 05 and install it into the 95 body after you get the 95 stripped.
The engines are a little different but the 95 engine and trans should be easy to resell. Oh and the 05 has six lug wheels and the 95 has 5 so you would have to also swap the rear axles. I am currently putting a 89 rear drive Astro RS on a 98 AWD frame with a V8. matter of fact I am about 85% done. If you go V8 you will need the passenger side exhaust manifold like this https://www.ebay.com/itm/RH-EXHAUST-MAN ... 2749.l2649
But do not buy one yet let me make sure it fits first since I just ordered mine. I made the motor mounts from 1/4 inch steel plate. you will need a special oil pan made from a 4.3 v6 steel pan I got mine from here but you will have to email the owner to see if he still has some-https://jagsthatrun.com/
then the oil pump pick up for a 4.3 4x4 s-10 to match the pan shape. Now to use a 400 small block I think you may need a special flywheel to fit the 4l60E which is what transmission is in your 05. But I am not sure on this point. Feel free to ask me any questions as you progress on your project. Mark

Hey, thanks markmitch. Can I ask why I can't run the 6 lug rear axle? I prefer the 6 lug since it's getting a SB400 and also plan on adding a snow plow when it's done. Mike

You 'can' run the 5 lug wheels on the front and the 6-lug on the rear, but when it comes to carrying a spare, wha are you planning?
You could also do conversion spacers, if there is such an item for that combination.

if you use the 95 it has the 5 lug on the rear axle which is why I said you will have to swap rear axles. The frame is only under the front so when you swap frames the rear axle is still on the 95 body.

Sorry I missed you Rod, not concerned about a spare at all. Just want to run the 6-lug wheels and suspension that came with the 2005.

I have a 400-SB sitting on an engine stand (for about 20 years now) that I intend to swap with the engine in my 92 Astro (it has a 350 now). I bought this crate motor NEW from GM back in the 80's.

I LOVE this engine!
Had it in my G20 van for quite a few years.
It has the torque of a BIG BLOCK in a small block package!

Eventually I threw in a Comp Roller Cam, dual quad Offenhauser intake, dual Edelbrock carbs, big-valve angle plug high-compression heads, Pete-Jackson gear drive, Mallory and Accel ignition system, Hooker Super-Comp headers, etc.

It's just waiting for me to bring it back to life!

Here's how it looked back then after I gave it some love...

Engines-400sm340px.jpg (64.26 KiB) Viewed 382 times

Eventually I even supercharged it.
It's still sitting on the stand with the supercharger setup.
I only pulled it because (at the time) I put in something bigger.

The 400-SB uses it own EXTERNALLY balanced flex-plate.
You will need to find one compatible with later model transmissions.

Good luck with your project!
Take pictures! :D

Exactly what I was thinking on the flywheel just could not remember why I was thinking that if that makes sense. externally balanced was what I could not remember.

I orderd a different exhaust manifold for the passenger side of my V8 because the truck manifold I had rubbed against the frame. After doing a bunch of research and looking at pictures I ordered one for an 80's truck with 350/305 V8
I got it in yesterday and it fits perfect.
This is what I ordered: https://www.ebay.com/itm/RH-EXHAUST-MAN ... 2749.l2649
