Noise from new cap and rotor

Noise from new cap and rotor

Postby ctrice [OP] » December 14th 2010, 10:22pm

My wifes 2001 Safari was missing fairly bad through out the driving range, but especially noticeable at high speeds. My first thought was to change the cap and rotor which luckily did the trick (The old ones were trashed). My problem is that the new rotor clicks inside the rotor cap pretty loudly. The van is running great now, but outside of being kind of annoying should I be worried about the clicking at all. I am confident I installed everything nice and secure i.e. tightened the rotor and cap down as far as they could/should go. Any thoughts?

It's pretty dog-gone loud with the cover off and quite noticable with the cover on. I drove it around for a while and it seemed to dissapate some and I didnt really notice it at high speed. I did an experiment by not telling my wife about it before she drove it for the first time and she called me right away thinking something was wrong so it definitly was not there prior to the fix and It is loud enough for her to notice right away.

Strange. Which flavor Cap and Rotor did you choose ? I've owned several different years from 85 to 01, but never had a clicking from the Dist. Always used the better parts, the caps with brass in the towers (Blue Streak, Borg Warner Select, the like. Could be the parts you chose to use, especially if it did not make noise before the change.
Let us know, and we'll put those parts on the naughty list. (maybe)

You could try removing it , inspecting to make sure no debris is caught inside cap , also check to be sure that the rotor is seated properly , it has little tabs on the bottom that fit in holes on the distributor and maybe it is not seated down all the way and sticking up a little causing a noise when spinning fast , Mine does not make any noise, yours should not either.

I'll have to check on the parts brand name but they were generic from Advance Auto. They didnt appear to be poor quality. I am certain I installed them correctly with the plastic pins seated properly on the rotor. It is friggin' freezing here right now and I dont have a warm place to work on the van so I will deal with the clicking for now as the van is running fine. When it warms up a tad (above 35 at least) I will pull the cover and double check the install. I still welcome any comments though. thanks again

That clicking could possibly be spark arcing , maybe the coil wire , spark plug wire , use some dielectric grease in the boot ends . when you remove the engine cover run engine at night and look to see if you can see the arcing .

If you take a look at some of the older posts, I'm sure you will find lots of discussion about ignition parts, the good-the bad-the ugly, the dos and don'ts, the whyfors and whynots.
