Got my first faultcodes yey!

Got my first faultcodes yey!

Postby toadfin [OP] » August 3rd 2016, 6:18pm

Were going a longer leg with the new astro and driving steadily at 80-95 kmh ive seen a few ties SES light coming on but died after awhile. Today with similar conditions the light came on and stayed on. No other symtoms except a lighty more rough idle. i think. Got fault codes 13 and 32, so oxygen sensor and EGR. Cleared them and atleast on the quick test leg i did they didnt come on again. Anyone experienced this, got any suggestions on where to start looking.. or course i dont have any spares or lots of tools on me on the road.. And got about 600k more to go..

The rough idle is from the EGR valve...likely you have carbon build up. Unfortunately, without any tools, you'll have to live with it. You could just disconnect it for the time being.

The O2 sensor code, that's going to be something that may affect your MPG and can cause the engine to stall as well. The bad thing with the O2 sensor, is that if the engine is running too rich because of it, you can fry your Catalytic converter.

Watch your fuel usage on the next couple of tanks and see where you are sitting at. If the MPG's are still decent, then you might just have a sluggish O2 sensor, but it's kinda sorta working. If it's gotten pretty bad, then you will want to get that replaced ASAP. They aren't expensive for a 90 Astro and aren't terribly hard to replace most of the time. A 7/8ths wrench is usually enough to get the job done.
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.

Well the mgp looks fine, and she accelerates quite fine so im not TOO worried. The car was inspected less than a wek ago and exhaust tests are mandatory in finland to all cars made after 1976 and it was fine so probably the problem lies in the egr carbon build up as you said and sluggish o2 as shes been run on short distance drive for the last two years. Shes not registered to be " low emissions" car so i can take the cat converter out if i want to, although it helps on the emissions test having it on.

Be more specific, there is more than one EGR code. They refer to different things. One is carbon build up on the pintle and the other is buildup from the valve through the tube into the lower intake manifold that needs to be cleaned out. Both are relatively easy to fix, the IM one a bit tougher as it requires upper IM and spider removal to clean. The pintle cleaning is a two bolt job to remove the EGR.

Well the code was that the egr is not opening or closing in closed loop so i would figure that the cause lies in either the valve itself being clogged up or, and most probably with the o2 sensor acting up, that probably needs changing and i'll have to ask some questions over the installment of it. But thank you swharris, i was not aware of the other possible issue on the egr with the tube and intake.
