weird oil pressure problem?

weird oil pressure problem?

Postby sambalayne [OP] » March 24th 2011, 3:27am

this started happening in my safari a couple days ago and it has me stumped so i used my iphone to video the gauge and maybe you lovely folks can tell me whats what.normally when idling the gauge sits at about half and anything above idle its up all the way. its been like that since i bought the van a couple years ago. is it even normal for the gauge to be all the way to max with the engine at anything above idle? anyway this problem only happens at idle. HELP! is it even a problem or just something engines do as the get older (mine has 170K)

EDIT: youtube is n00bing it up. hers the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgyFMcFrPi4

Don't rely on what the gage is doing to be honest. This could be a problem with the sending unit, the gage or the wiring in between. Get a pressure gage and plug in where the sending unit is... Then tell us what it really is doing.

Try replacing the sending unit.
Had the same problem in my 91 and 94.

You might want to test the gauge first. The specs are in the shop manual There are set parameters and readings for the gauge on a tester. if it tests good then try the same for the sending unit. Most people discount it but there is always the possibility of the wiring between the two. Before buying parts its always better to test. Fifty cents for a section of wire or a connector seems better than an new sending unit.
The point is that it can be several different things that can create this problem and rather than just replace parts it would be better to test things then repair/replace the item that is the problem.

Lots of help here huh.Good luck

If you don't mind, where was the bad connection? Mine's been acting up for a while now. Thanks.
