98 Astro tuneup parts and general questions

Postby 888 [OP] » April 14th 2017, 5:25pm

Hey, new to the site but not entirely new to Astros, I had a first gen cargo van some years ago but not long enough to have to do anything to it. It seemed functional and reliable, I just decided to go back to a truck.

Long story short, I had minor shoulder surgery that turned major so I am forbidden to drive a manual transmission for the foreseeable future due to stress on the reattached biceps tendon. I have three drywall anchors holding everything together.

All 7 of the vehicles we currently own are manuals, that's all i ever drive. So I was thinking of something that had an automatic, could partially replace my Cummins dually for light duty hauling, and came up with an Astro.

Most of them around here (SW Ohio) are either rusted or flogged to death but I found one 98 4.3 with 92k miles from an old gent's estate. A few rough edges but looks solid top and bottom, new tires and battery, holds good oil pressure when hot, I should have it in a day or two.

The old gent took care of his own stuff till the end so no one knows maintenance history. Plus, he was ill for the better part of two years so it's been sitting a bit.

So I plan on ordering all new filters and tuneup parts today or tomorrow from Rock Auto and getting one of my sons to help me install everything. I'm not going to have full use of my right arm for quite a while and this will be my only automatic so I need to get preventative with what I do while off on disability.

Since it''s kind of a pain to get to the engine from what I can see I've been checking other threads on here so I see AC Delco plugs and Delco/Delphi wires appear to be the way to go. Planning on getting Delco cap and rotor as well. I generally use Wix filters and that brings me to my other question.

Rock Auto has two types of fuel filters.....threaded both ends and another that is not described. Any idea on what model year they used each? I see some threads showing what a pain it can be to get them loose in the rust belt, but nothing yet on where each type is used.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Joe

Don't know for sure, but my 2000 rwd is threaded on both ends. I usually use AC Delco Pro filters, don't mind Wix tho. At Rock Auto ACDELCO GF652 Fuel Filter lists for GMC 1983-2005

Thanks! I just got the van home and the owner's manual actually lists GF481, which is the same as the GF652 you mention.

Rock Auto shows that as being threaded on both sides, but they also call out a GF652F/GF481C under the 98, which must be different somehow.

Same filters, probably different packaging or something silly.

I just noticed my manual is from a 2000 and my truck is a 1998, haha. Guess I need to do more digging before trusting the manual 100% or are GM's usually pretty standard? I'm used to VW's where even the official factory manuals are a mere suggestion as to what is installed and where it can be found. Especially when it comes to the electrical section.
