98 Astro Won't Start , Confused!

98 Astro Won't Start , Confused!

Postby justjanets [OP] » April 19th 2017, 12:30am

Someone please help me!? My astro is giving me problems with not starting at all. Put the key in the ignition and turn to start and I get a click. Don't call me a dummy now...lol . I have replaced the battery with a new one. It had originally started out with this and then I would be able to try to start it again and it would turn the engine over and start, now it won't. I can actually jump start it though. But to try to start it without getting a jump won't work. Could it be the ignition? I dunno, I'm a newbie to trying to fix on my own and a poor person to take it to a mechanic. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds to me like you run the battery down. Connect a voltmeter to the battery and see how many volts the battery has. If it is less than 12 volts, then charge the battery.

Welcome, You said you put a new battery in and it still won't start, but will if you jump it. A few things to check would be the connections to the battery, make sure they are clean and tight. Next check the connection of the ground lead to the motor, make sure it is clean and tight. Next check the connection to the starter and make sure it is clean and tight.(a little harder to get to but not overly difficult.) Make sure the Battery has 12 volts, I have gotten defective new batteries in the past, it can happen. Check those things out and let us know what you find.

^^^^^^^^^^Yup, START there (no pun intended). Then, move on to checking/cleaning/securing EVERY ground you can find; then, do the same with all the ones you CAN'T find. lol
Seriously, this CAN be a great opportunity to learn an awful lot about your van. Work safely and pop back with questions. Someone will be more than happy to help you along. And no matter HOW much someone knows, there was a time when they knew less than you so don't get intimidated with tech-speak and jargon. Best of luck to you!

I know that everyday that I live, I know less than I did the day before.
