Engine tapping sound and no power

Engine tapping sound and no power

Postby the1guy66 [OP] » May 11th 2011, 1:44am

Hi,

I have a 95 Astro V6 4.3, recently I had the water pump go a month ago on the highway, after that the van started to have this loud tapping noise, no power and misfiring, I am hoping there is a quick fix other than replacing the lifters / valves.

I fixed the misfire, replaced the wires, plugs, cap and rotor. The misfire was still there, I replaced the ECM and the misfire is gone, but still no power.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is it still tapping? and when it overheated how bad was it.A compression test would be in order now I would think.

When it over heated the temp just shot up from normal to the top, I pulled over as quick as possible, but when I looked there was next to no antifreeze left. I stopped and did not see where the leak was so I filled it up and started the engine, at that point the tapping sound was present.
I will try a compression test this weekend.
Thanks

Sorry for the late reply,

I added the coolant after it cooled down a bit, it did not boil when I added it. I did not have a chance to do a compression test over the weekend but I am thinking head gasket, and maybe the push rods, I saw this morning that there is some white smoke coming from the tailpipe when the engine is cold. I will have the time to do it next week, so I guess an engine rebuild may be in the books for my time off.

the white smoke sounds like water.check your plugs if when you do a compression check really clean looking plug means it getting water in that cylinder.i would have the heads checked for warpage and manafluxed for cracks if it turns out to be water or low compression problem.if it not oil(blue smoke) or low oil pressure problems then block probably took it in stride.Heads what usually get the main damage in overheating when it only a short duration as you described.

The oil pressure it normal, and yes it is white smoke but only until the engine warms up, the plugs look normal a bit dirty not out of the ordinarty, I had the block checked and there are no cracks. I am going to take the heads off next week to replace the gaskets, I am also going to replce the pushrods and valves, while the heads are off. I will send the heads to get checked while they are off. I prced the parts and I am looking at something reasonable.
The coolant is not getting mixed with the oil so I am thinking just replace teh gaskets and check the heads. I was hoping to get away without having to pull the heads and replace the gaskets, but I really like my van and want to keep it as long as I can.
Thanks.
