van wont start when warm. no spark.

hey guys.

having a problem with the old van... it starts like a champ when its stone cold and runs fine until its shut off, after that theres no spark from the coil at all. the only way to get it to restart is to give it a couple hours to cool of to absolutely stone cold then it will start up no problem. is this the coil or could it be something else??!

!992. Coils many times will spark yellow when going bad. It could be the coil. It could be the ignition module. Check positioning sensor, ect, ect. What did you check so far. I just had an idea. Not sure if it will work but what if you took some canned refrigerant. Some thing you could spray on the dizzy, or ignition module to cool it down. You can check the coil with a multimeter, some module can be checked at the part store. Not sure what sort of pick up you have in your distributor.
If it was my van I would find out if the ignition module can be checked first. I have a 2000 and it was sort of a pita to remove. so once it reaches operating temperature it cuts out. Did it do this out of the blue?

Yes niebors truck did that (same 4.3)it was the coil.

Coils are not all that expensive, and since you have bad spark, it would be to your advantage to just replace it. I'll bet that you will find it's the fox in the henhouse.

just found a ac delco oil on rock auto for 41 dollars. If you are near pittsburgh you can have my borg weiner coil, it is three days old. So the color is orange and it will start? What about when it warms up and will not start any change? My coil spark is orange and I think it runs fine. How far will the spark jump, is it strong or weak looking?

ok. just replaced the coil. the one in the van was the original AC/delco so it was time... BUT IT DIDNT FIX MY PROBLEM! still no spark when the motor's hot

...Ok check this few things...Air Filter(make sure its clean/good)....Make sure your bat terminals are clean/thight at bat and body...chk starter...and try this take air filter out and run to see ....then we will get into fuel modules/injectors etc if any

IF you replace the coil, replace the omdule as well. Fialing coils often overwork modules.

its not an air problem although ive tried that. air filter out cranked the engine still no firing up. its deff a spark problem.

Can you take out all your sparkplugs chk the gap plus make sure the ceramic its not damage...grab ceramic with fingers and try to move it up/down + turn it....when put back make sure the boot part goes all the way in= feel the click/snap in... also re-chk at cap....

think perhaps you miss understand. theres no spark coming directly out of the coil

If you want to change your module it does not cost you too much money and its simple ....right under the Dist Cap(plug wires/Dist)...open cap so you can see rotor ...your module its you see the 2 connector on the Distributor...unplug them (after making bat. + Safety syst disc)...it has 2 small screws take them out and another small plug connector behind.... Put new...all back together and chk...
