Hard Starting When Engine Is Cold...

Hard Starting When Engine Is Cold...

Postby pharbach [OP] » June 3rd 2017, 8:53pm

I have a 2001 Astrovan. It runs fine, accelerates fine and does highway speeds without hesitations or bucking. However, it is a bear (sometimes....to "usually") to start when its the first start of the day, and the engine is cold. I always have to cross my fingers to hope the thing starts. Once it has been running for awhile and I shut it down, I can start it up with no problems until the engine goes cold again either overnight or during the day while I am working at work. I live in Florida, so there is no freezing weather, just normal cooling down of the engine to cold merits a war in trying to start the van up again risking the battery going dead. I can't hear the fuel pump running, but that doesn't mean its not running, as it WILL start eventually with patience after numerous attempts. The fuel filter has been replaced recently, along with spark plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap. I don't suspect a spark problem, as as long as it starts, the van performs well. I am leaning towards some sort of fuel problem or whatever kind of temp sensor controls the MAF sensor, or other temp sensor involved in fuel delivered to the engine thru the ECU. Am I on the right track here ??

So the engine turns over, just doesn't start?

Next time, do KOEO (key on engine off) for three seconds, then off, then KOEO for 3 seconds, then off, then KOEO for 3 seconds, then try to start.

Three fuel pump prime cycles should be good.

A cheap OBD2 adapter will show you what the computer is seeing from various sensors.

A lot of those will only show you fault codes, not live data, depending on the model. You can get bluetooth adapters to use with your smartphone/tablet for about $7 with shipping, see the link in my sig.

I am getting to feel that my fuel pump pressure is low. I would like to test it with a fuel pump pressure gauge. Where exactly IS the port to check the fuel pressure? Will I have to remove the doghouse, or is it accessible under the hood ??

Are you saying it turns over at a normal speed and it takes a while to start or is it slow to turn over? Quick and simple way to tell if it's fuel related is to shoot some starter fluid down the intake while trying to start. If it fires you're on the right track of fuel problems. If not you still need to continue on with spark problems.
