New fuel module test results and thoughts

Postby rollinhome [OP] » June 17th 2011, 5:59pm

I have a 98 safari, v-6, 2whd, I have written here about an intermittent condition of power loss. various computer analysis indicated a cat problem though that ended up not being true. fuel presure tests where 52 lbs at idle with no movement during accel. after testing many items: ig mod, coil, new plugs and wires, removing the cat, i decided to change out the fuel module.
results. I drove for several weeks testing the performance and fuel pressure. the loss of power never occurred again and the fuel pressure while still hit 52 at idle, rose to 56-58 lbs under load. feeling comfortable of it's reliability, i took the van on a
2400 mile trip, to see the country and visit some friends.

the engine performed flawlessly in regards to the loss of power. mpg was better, which i found interesting since my understanding is that the engine was starving for fuel and now was getting more.

after 1500 hundred miles it did develop a slight miss fire during the warm up period that went away after 15 min. this seems to correspond to moisture conditions and so i am going to check the plug/coil wires, moving through the ignition system one by one.

I did purchase the fuel module from the gmparts guy out east, referred to by people on this list. it was delivered quickly and as we know, was less than half the price of my most reasonable parts center here in chicago.

I am so thankful to this group for all your thoughts. I was close to giving up.

side note. since i had cut the cat out, the van would not meet emission standards here and thus was unlicenseable in chicago. so, on my trip i registered the van in alabama. this saved me huge dollars on exhaust system repairs. currently the exhaust is std with a gutted cat.

What VIN Code is the 4.3? I recently i stalled a 2002 MPFI unit on my 99'. The performance increase was amazing 20-23 MPG. My originally equipment was a CSFI unit with those troublesome Poppet Valves on the ends. They tend to clog and stick, P0171 and P0174 codes, lean Bank 1-2. I'm outside of Chicago were using the 10% Ethanol Fuel, it clogs things even faster.
Maybe weld on a CAT and get the Fuel Trim working. Your wallet will thank you at the Gas Pump.
Best Wishes, MattB.
