Recommended Tools for Engine Work

Recommended Tools for Engine Work

Postby robinasu [OP] » August 25th 2017, 7:32pm

Hey all,

What would you say are the required wrench accessories and other special tools to maintain these vans? I love tools. I have a tool problem. Actually, my WIFE has the tool problem. I'm totally fine with it.

I'm curious what length extensions, crows feet, wobble sockets, etc would you consider a must for working on the Astro/Safari?

As far as I know there not any "special tools" required to working on these van. So the same tools you would need to work on any other vehicle.

A cheap harbor freight set can get you pretty far. until you need some longer extensions and larger open ended wrenches

if you have a tool problem then you probably already have what you need

2 words, various assortment. It really depends, because crows feet and wobble sockets etc are generally not ever going to be needed on our vans. Not saying that they can never get used, but just aren't a necessity. While not complete, I did start making a list over here https://sites.google.com/site/astrosafariinfo/tools

I have had Gen1, 2, and 3 vans, and with all of the work I have done(from bearings to engine replacements), 99,99% is always done with a standard set of wrenches/sockets/drivers.

Start off with a general combination set of tools.
If you need something special... you buy it and add it to your collection.
