p0442 trouble code...?

197,000 miles on this '01- 2wd -4.3 vortec. Was traveling down the N.J. Turnpike ( )
and saw my CEL illuminate. Did not affect driveability so I made it down to our Delaware Beach house, 200 + miles away. Drove it all week with the CEL on but with no issues.

Got back home a week later (CEL still on) and read the code...p0442-emissions system-
(small leak) . Dumped the code today and will drive it a while...I'm SURE the CEL will come back eventually.

My Question...Anyone here have an idea where to look first?

Any help would be Genuinely appreciated!

To answer your question, it's a leak in the evap system, most likely an engine compartment hose that has degraded. It's really cheap to replace all of the vacuum hoses under there, just do them one at a time so you can't mix them up. ;)

I just did a major tune on my Astro less than a week ago...No doubt it was me who must have dislodged sumthin'!

There are a few sections to the evap system, but the problem is probably up by the canister(near the battery). The best thing is to take a look at the GM Techline eSI(link in my sig), it's the digital factory service manual in a virtualbox image, it will have all of the diagnostics checks and diagrams.

my vote is for gas cap... or the mating surface of the filler tube to the gas cap

Hose damage, if they are cracked, brittle, lose, etc. Sometimes the canister fittings get brittle and can crack if in an accident or even if someone is rough with the hoses. On the astros the canisters are pretty stout, but it would still be something to look at.

Hmmm...Could the evaporative purge valve fittings cause this trouble code if they were dislodged or otherwise damaged during the major tune I performed a couple of weeks ago?


I was pullin' on a lotta' stuff under there while changing ignition wires...I dunno'.
