Run without the computer?

Run without the computer?

Postby ryannagy [OP] » October 16th 2017, 11:59pm

Would a Chevy Astro van run if the onboard computer/circuit board was disabled or not plugged in? Just curious.

You need a HEI distributor. A 4bbl Elderbrock intake. And the carb of your choice, Elderbrock/AFB style. A holley wont fit it hits the distributor. There is a Q-junk intake for them to that came factory. Both are still sold new as boat parts.

And a fuel pressure regulator. Even a TBI's fuel pump pressure is to high for the carb.

Find the tach feed for the computer and the 4L60 still works if you use the MAP sensor and get a carb with a TPS. Or switch to a 700R4 which is a better trans if your modifying things and like adjustability.

The VSS is still hooked up and the speedo so it works fine. If you go 700R it has to be one of the last years that used a VSS.

On 94 that about sums up the options when ditching the ol better and easier.

Not 'as-is', but yes you can make it happen with enough $$ and the right parts as CM said.

New(or is that old?) New old gets expensive though:
$260 for the edelbrock intake 2111
~$400 for edelbrock carb(depending on exactly what features you want)
$130 for TPS kit(or make your own) if you want to use with the factory computer to control the transmission
~$60-150 for the HEI distributor
$50-200 for the adjustable pressure regulator(lots of choices/quality here)
~$1-2,000 for a rebuilt or performance 700r4 if you go that way.

So somewhere in between a grand or two depending on which way you want to go, and if you want new parts. Of course used prices will vary greatly and depends on what you have available.

Thanks everyone. The reason that I asked is that the last time my mechanic worked on my car, he brought in a electrician who showed me a picture of my ECU with a hole in the board.. It looked liked something blew out or burnt out (literally). He got the thing working again "as is" without putting in another ECU (they are hard to come by in Mexico!). And I was wondering if he had somehow disabled the entire thing. But I guess not. Sounds like it is not possible.

The van eats up gas like I cannot believe. And I am wondering if a used ECU from Ebay would help. Also, wondering what will happen when I stick it in! I am guessing the electrician made/did some modifications to the original.

I would definitely try a replacement ECU. Maybe post in the wanted section, someone might have one.

I will look and see if I have one to spare I know I have a few but some are for a V8 so I will have to look through a box since I moved a few months ago and they are still boxed up. If you do not hear from me send me a PM cause I am forgetful due to meds.

If it does, it would be the first time.

there are points type (mechanical ignition) distributors out there for the 4.3 and they do have some advantages that out weigh their disadvantages in mission critical installations.

What we found out on a friends wife's Celebrity, it can use a whole host of different ECU's, but, and I mean BUT, you have to re-use your old e prom chip, as it's designed for that specific vehicle. On her car, the speedo was off by about 20mph until he changed the chip. Then everything was back to normal.
