2003- dropping fuel tank, what are these connectors?

I'm dropping the fuel tank to do my fuel pump, and can't figure out how to undo various things around the tank. I want to take the tank all the way out. I'm working without a manual and many of the good writeups seem to be for an earlier model.

I'll post photos next time I get under the van, don't have them today.

There's a plastic assembly (that I assume is emissions-related?) sitting on top of the tank, towards the front of the tank. There are fuel lines (?) going to it. I can't figure out how to disconnect the lines. I can see two little jaws that grip a ring but I can't figure out how to release them.

There is also a wiring harness above the assembly, black and pretty big, with a red retaining strap that looks a little like a very thin ziptie and a couple of white retaining clips on either side of the harness connection. I have seen that before but have mostly worked on older vehicles and I can't figure out how to release any part of that.

NOte that I'm not talking about the fuel pump connections, but the other assembly on top of the fuel tank, towards the front of the tank.

That is the EVAP canister. You're doing the right thing -- you can pinch the outer ring and it should help release those little "jaws that grip a ring". It's a bit of a PITA -- but eventually they'll come off. I use some vice-grips to squeeze the outer ring and then a pick to push the jaws over that ring.

That wiring harness is called the fuel pump jumper. The pump side of that harness goes to the top of the fuel pump, where there are two additional pigtails (the ones that plug into the pump). You need to disconnect it before you drop the tank. I don't remember exactly how to re-lease that harness... but essentially you need to remove that red retaining strap, pry up on the lock tab and then you can pull them apart. I also remember it being a bit of a PITA the first time -- but keep at it -- you'll figure it out.

PS. It’s easier to remove the other side of the large evap canister hose. It’s attached to a small rectangular thing held into place by one bolt attached to the unibody.


I don’t remember removing the small evap hose... but perhaps I did... just go slow while dropping the tank and you’ll figure it out.

I used the threads on here to guide my repair and they helped a ton. It was the very first large vehicle repair I ever did... so if I can do it, you can do it too.
