Engine question

Engine question

Postby markmitchmarkmitch is online! [OP] » July 7th 2018, 2:17am

Ok I have rebuilt a few engines over the years but I have never had to change valve springs so my question is: The old springs have a flat steel spring inside of the round spring but the new springs do not am I suppose to remove them from the old springs and install into the new springs? Little bit of history: engine was a stock 1991 350 TBI from a silverado. I am using the 193 heads but they are now ported and polished . The reason i am changing the springs is because I have installed a LT1 full roller cam from a Buick Roadmaster and the new springs are matched to the cam. Yes I installed all the parts to convert it to the roller cam. Thanks markmitch

I don't think so. I say that because the roller lifters are easier on the rocker arms and spring assemblies, and valve train in general. They don't have the old harsh cam lobe ramps of the flat tappet cams, so you shouldn't need the extra spring.
I didn't see any extra springs in the heads of my roller 4.3 that I just installed in my van a couple of weeks ago. It's a 92 engine.

^what he said ^

unless youre planning on revin' the piss out of it. they might help get a few more revs out of it before the valves float but if you use them, be sure to check for coil bind and check spring pressures @ various lifts and compare to the cam specs if you have them.

Edit to add: oh.. stock camshaft.. use only the springs that came with it. BTW some racers use triple springs.

Yes Mark use it. It keeps the springs from binding and grinding against each other. They don't include it because it is considered a non wearing part.

Wow ok that sounds like fun. LOL
currently I am porting and polishing the TBI heads according to the video's I found on you tube. I also ported/port matched the intake and the exhaust manifolds. Every little bit helps when you have to deal with smog laws. mark

Transmission was a failure at first fluid leaked all over the floor of garage but I took it back out and took it about 80% apart realized I had a broken snap ring so I ordered new snap rings and put it together again. Now it shifts super good and at 35 mph when I punch the gas pedal it broke the tires lose. LOL I may have to rebuild another one in the future cause my wife wants me to build a late 60's early 70's truck next. So my pre plan is LS engine 4L80 trans but leave the exterior looking stock. But of course (for my back) bucket seats from a newer vehicle. I checked on the LT1 site and the stock valve springs do not require a damper spring thats factory.

I never have, and I don't think you are supposed to. However, I don't know that there is any harm either, and it might even be marginally beneficial. But the benefit is probably inconsequential, or the spring suppliers would probably include them. It may be like some "stock" parts you remove and throw away. It might also slightly affect spring rate and seat pressure specs, but again probably not enough to matter. Don't know for certain... but I've always tossed old worn parts that could potentially break.

But it's a good question.. one that maybe someone might have a more definitive answer to.

Is that related to an Italian tune-up?
