Anybody have luck with long block engines? old vin Z .Jasper ? or any company Chevy. discontinued that moter. Anybody have any luck with one thanks!

I used a boat engine. I never had a problem. More low end grunt is what boat engines are about. Better mileage. I like em.

I got almost enough miles on mine I would be through a warentee. Don't smoke or use oil.

I put in a remanufactured Car Quest engine in my wife's 86 Astro. It had a 30K 3 year warranty on it. She had no problems with it for 5 years, after I moved that engine into her 90 safari. It did eventually need head gaskets, but other than that, that engine only got regular oil changes. It's still in her 90 safari too. The last time I looked, she had 80K miles on it in the 90 van, and 25K miles on it in the 86 van (for a total of 105K miles).

How is the engine running now?? Any issues or still going strong?? Just curious I know its been a while since this post. I'm looking into a reman engine and just trying to do my diligence and research outcomes. I have found a lot of negativity around reman engines and it may be the installer who is the rate limiting step

It's very difficult sometimes to weed though the reviews, both negative and positive.
Poor shade-tree mechanics, novices and amateurs, and so many other factors can lead to engine issues.. and of course ultimately poor reviews. Even here.. an engine that developed a head gasket issue after 5 years; how do we honestly know this engine wasn't overheated due to any number of unrelated circumstances.

Of course we know the dealership is often loaded with new warranty repairs too... so what failure percentage is normal?

There is no 100 guarantee. I do believe however, the best option is to have the engine builder ALSO be the engine installer. It should be someone reputable who's been around a while. Even a failed engine that is warrantied, will still need a full R&R. A 3rd party installer will NOT cover that labor.

If you are doing all the installation work yourself.. then that is a big game changer, and the gambles are up to you.

I got 12 yrs and 95000 miles on a rebuilt long block 4.3 in a 95 rwd. BUDGET ENGINE REBUILDERS CLEVELAND OH. Leaked 2 drips of oil per weekend and none during week since first day. Be darned if I can find it. Never was bad enough to care and I didn't have confidence the motor would last out the warranty...I was wrong. They were cheapest at time and all I could afford. Took a gamble and it paid off. And Oil/filter(every 5000 mi.) ,2 air-filters and a alternator is all we ever opened the hood for in a dozen years!
I have heard both positive and negative reviews of these guys but my experience was one of the few notable purchases I've made and would try em again. Rebuilts are like wimmin. You never know what ya truly got and if it is gonna last... till ya run her through the cycle a while.
