Engine harness disaster!

Engine harness disaster!

Postby rolo [OP] » November 3rd 2018, 9:02pm

I need halp. Shop that put my new engine in omitted all of the harness clips and hose clamps keeping all the loose bits from rubbing while going down the road. They wrecked all of the wire loom too. Wires were stretched and pigtails were pinched, I'm going through it and replacing bad wires and loom but things just don't look right. Can't get anything lined up with the clamps and clips. I've got a copy of the FSM but can't find routing diagrams for the life of me.

Does anyone have a handy pic of the back driver's side of an '03+ engine, looking down onto where the fuel lines, rear a/c lines, and wire harness turn under towards the rear of the van? Pics from underneath might help too.

I don't think there are any lawyers here to sue the fish poop that installed your engine.

Hire a lawyer, or if you paid with a credit card, charge it back.

Bob, thank you! My engine bay is a disaster compared to that one. Nothing is in the right place. I'm going to have to pull everything and redo it. Fuuuuu...

AstroWill, MeterPig, for real. This has been a disaster from the word go. I feel like I'm in some alternate reality. If I were the believing type, I'd think I was cursed. Every single time I go to a mechanic (I dont' go to cheap ones either which is what galls me the most) to do work I'm not ready to dig into, I get the shaft. I'll deal with them later. In the meantime I got places to go and things to do. My back is doing a lot better and I'm happiest when I'm greasy. I just need to replace all the clips and clamps and figure out where everything goes.

I ought to get a paper copy of the FSM, I'm using the GM Techline FSM. I've searched every which way and haven't found the right keywords to get a view of the back of the engine.

Posting up what I can find in case the subject of "routing of things connected to the engine" comes up in a search in the future. I hate threads with no closure.

97522
Positive and negative cable

97338 97340
RH engine harness and key

97346 97348
LH engine harness and key

97334
Ground strap diagram showing harness clip locations over the top rear of the motor.

97352 97354
And for me, the key diagram, tranny wiring and key. This is where my disaster starts.

97350
Undercarriage wiring

97356
Aux Air hose routing. (Can't tell if there's supposed to be a bracket bolted to the head or not, there's a broken bracket on the hard line on my van, it's the loose bracket that bit my plug wires when they put the van back together)

97342 97344
Fuel hoses and key

97358
Here's a screencap of the video MechBob posted for reference. I have no reason to believe this is altered in any way from factory. It matches all of the diagrams above.

97360
My engine as it currently sits. I've pulled the connectors and ground but it's laying exactly where I found it. I replaced the ECT pigtail because it got stretched somehow. One break at the connector and the other up in the harness. I think they missed a bunch of this stuff at the back when they pulled the subframe out. It's almost as if they were winging it, imagine!

MechBob to the rescue! Thanks again.

As useful as all these diagrams are they're showing everything in isolation. The last few seconds of removing the doghouse in that video you posted are more helpful in getting the big picture than all these diagrams put together.

You are welcome. But the diagrams show proper bracket info,so you should be able to figure it out with both. Also, you can go back and look at the lines routing

Picture number 2 and picture number 3 should have enough to get you going in the right direction (pic 1 is not working, but is probably helpful). not much else up on top to show. if you put the harness back into that position, everything else should become much more clear as you continue the repair of the butchery. hopefully you took pictures?! As a professional mechanic, I wish I could say that I hadn't seen that kind of crap before, but its all to common. Where do you live? perhaps someone in your area can chime in with a reputable place to spend your hard earned cash.

Not sure why pic 1 isn't loading, it's just the routing for the battery leads. I put all of these here just to have them all in one place in case someone finds their "new" van has hackery like mine. There are so many threads that are left unresolved and it drives me nuts to find the one post that discusses my issue only to find the person never came back to update it. Can't learn anything if no one shares the results of their efforts.

I'm near Sacramento but I'm done with mechanics. This one was recommended to me by the Bureau of Automotive Repair after the last one wrecked the motor doing the LIM. If I can't fix it myself, I'll part it out and move on to a new project. I took it to a mechanic in the first place because I hurt my back and I just hurt my back again trying to fix what they wrecked so I'm almost at that point with this thing. I'm on hiatus until I can lift my arms again, got no more money in the budget to keep this thing going, it's going to be a labor of spite from now on.

welcome to the wonderful world of owning an astro. No one wants to work on them. And if they do, its extremely expensive or completely hack jobbed.

Yeah, these things take time. All things in their proper order.

Also, I forgot I can't edit posts after a certain amount of time, is there a way to go back in and fix the first photo?

Best thing to do is find a shop that does electrical trouble shooting and repair or get the wiring schematics for your van and figure it out by your self. My 89 had some issues I found the wiring book online for it and fixed it myself and I have no schooling in such things. Just took my time and marked wires with colored electrical tape and made up my own system of ID for wires I added or repaired then I put notes in the wiring book stating what was fixed and what was added so if I need to in the future I can go back to my notes. The key is taking your time and keeping good notes so if you can't work on it for a month or more you can go back to your notes to stay on the same page. We all forget right? Good luck and keep us posted on your progress. markmitch
