Astro won't start.

Astro won't start.

Postby Cabinetmaker [OP] » April 17th 2019, 4:34pm

Hi. First post. Life long mechanic, experienced with fuel injection. Recently acquired a 2000 Astro. Had fuel problems. Replaced pump, and has been running fine. Yesterday it dies pulling into driveway. Fuel pump is running, filter not clogged. It will start when squirting gas in the throttle body, but dies immediately. It appears the injectors might not be firing. Could this be an ecm problem?

Definitely a fuel supply problem. Test your fuel pressure first, just because the pump is running doesn't mean it's building the proper pressure.

Sure it could be the computer, but they hardly ever fail, so I would look elsewhere first.

Is there a port to hook up a gauge? If so, where would it be?

Yes, pull the engine cover off and the port is in the fuel line. https://sites.google.com/site/astrosafa ... uel-system

Often you can borrow a fuel pressure test kit from your LAPS.

Inside the van under the doghouse - looks like an schrader ( ? ) valve on a tire.
Sticks out of one of the 2 fuel lines going into intake manifold.

I just did a search for "fuel injection test port" and came up w/ quite a few hits for just that.
The search is better using your search engine w/ astrosafari.com in the search string, blah, blah.

And I think you can borrow a gauge from your LAPS.

It's in the link I posted above, but for your year it's listed in the FSM as 60-66psi.

I highly recommend grabbing the GM Techline eSI, it's an electronic factory service manual, lots of answers in there, links are in my signature.

Not sure about the 2000 model, but the earlier ones seem to get injector signal from the spark control unit in the distributor. When mine died, it killed both spark and fuel. BTW... do I have your old van? Mine was definitely owned by a cabinet maker before me. Still picking forstner bits and 1.25" staples out of all the crevices.

Checked pressure this morning. 28lbs. Not enough! Pump is new and has been working fine! Is the fuel pressure regulator adjustable?

Thanks

Supply power to the pump, while it's running, slowly pinch off the return line to see if your pressure improves.

What brand pump did you install? any Warr? what happens if you supply the pump with a full 12v directly at the pump? It is possible a bad connection can cause the low pressure.

Replaced pump in January. Under warranty. Just called O'Reilly's, they said bring in the old one we'll swap it out. I have a hot wire from the battery to pump with inline switch attached for easy diagnosis.

No bueno! 15psi is a far cry from FSM spec of 60-66 psi.

Time to further your diagnostics, to include checking the voltage/ground at the pump connector.

There are some nice diagnostics charts for you in the GM Techline esi(links in my sig).

Edit: Good to hear about the warranty on the pump, make sure you change the fuel filter when you change the pump.
