Distributor replacement problem

Distributor replacement problem

Postby Brandon [OP] » September 16th 2019, 2:12am

So, I like to try to do my own maintenance and I thought I could handle a distributor swap but I'm not sure what to do next. I'm afraid that I messed up big time by not finding TDC before starting but I'm not sure. I wanted to get some input before I make anything worse. I read on the forum and saw some videos saying that it wasn't necessary to find TDC, just mark the old one before removal, watch where it spins to on the way out, set the new one there and make sure it spins to the mark on the way in. That's what I did and it seemed to go smoothly but cranking gives me no ignition at all. If I'm slightly off shouldn't it run rough or at least get some amount of stumbling? Is it possible I'm 180 degrees off? How would I determine that? What should my next step be? Is there any reason I can't start from scratch, finding TDC on the compression stroke and lining the distributor up with the 6 mark? Like I said, I don't want to make anything worse or harder than it needs to be. I'd appreciate any advice,. Thank you!

Sounds like you had it right and that is what I do with all of my distributor replacements, as long as the engine doesn't move you are good to go. You can always go back to TDC and double check all of your work.

Everything plugged back in/etc?

I highly recommend that you grab the digital FSM(GM Techline eSI) as it has virtually every repair instruction for your van.(see links in sig)
