If the motor is seized you will have to either pull the tranny with it or pull the torque convertor off with the motor. The motor will be easier to pull with the more stuff you pull off it before trying to remove it.

2 ways to remove the motor......

Cut the front radiator support:

OR

Drop the subframe:

Have you ever pulled a motor out before? Cause doing a motor swap in these Vans is a little more challenging.

Yeah I plan on pull in the tranny with it and I've only done swaps on Honda so I know this is gonna be a crzy challenge but I'm up for it and thanks for the links

The shorter the engine hoist you have the better off you will be trying to get back in there cause with a big hoist its a pain in the azz. Leaving almost everything off the motor that you can really helps too sliding it in and out. We just did a swap on my buddy's '99 Safari....was a pain, but its worth the hassle. We just pulled the torque convertor off with the motor cause his was seized too. Just slide it forward until the torque convertor comes off, making sure not to hurt the input shaft of the tranny. Easier then pulling the tranny.

You can get a 4.3L out of fullsize pickup trucks too....just gotta swap over some parts.

Got a donor engine yet? If not, Pick N Pull should have something out there in the $200 range.

$179.99 plus $49.99 core charge. If you find something that was wrecked, odds are it was running when it hit whatever it hit. I just looked, they have an '02 Astro listed in inventory.

You could also check Craigslist, I stay out of the cars & trucks section. Too much temptation in there for me.

I've not looked, but I wonder if it's feasible to put a crank kit in one of these vans without pulling the motor? I've done it in an Olds station wagon & an E150 van.

I had my bottom end apart doing the oil pump spring. On a RWD I think it could be done.Plenty of room to get the crank out.
