dash panel goes bonkers engine quietly shuts down.

Postby unclemaui [OP] » May 29th 2020, 2:21pm

 going to the dentist, engine light comes on, fuel gauge goes from full to half back to full, voltage 14 volts normal speedometer shows I am doing 85, 65,90 mph 0n a 40 mph road. then the engine cuts off. pull to the side start it. back on the road. radio lost all of its settings. as if the battery was disconnected.

5 miles later everything I wrote above happened again. made it to dentist speedometer going wacko waiting for it to die again.
Got home. under the hood noting out of the ordinary.

95 Chevy Astro EXT v6, 96 k original miles
No cavities teeth cleaned

Any ideas?

You might try moving the battery cables around while its running. You might look into the fusible links too. I've not messed with them, but there is plenty of talk about them on the forum.

iirc, a member here had a similar problem and it turned out to be the bulkhead connector, which is behind the battery. One pin was loose-ish and arcing.

Thank you both for your suggestions had me discover quit by accident the positive terminal was indeed slightly loose ( not remotely enough to think it as loose enough to disconnect ). I still have original battery cables.

the one with the little teeth that dig into the battery "post" when I moved the battery a smidgen. to look at the connections behind the battery the dome lights went off. then back on.
pushed the battery nothing. wobbled it as much as you can while it is strapped in, dome light off on. then I turned what was a fairly firmly/tight battery cable just enough to get the dome lights to go off. tried starting van nothing. moved cable, dome lights on, tried van it clicked a few times then started.

So I tighten the battery cable even more, van started promptly.

This explains everything in my first post, thank you very much for your suggestion for what to look for.

new cables coming this weekend....
