Squealing/squeaking from engine, AC?

Squealing/squeaking from engine, AC?

Postby Paul_S [OP] » September 5th 2020, 6:33pm

Hi again all, I have a problem of a squeaking sound like bearings need oiling at idle which is pretty darn embarrassing if I am honest, I pull up to lights as slow as possible in the hope that we will get moving again so that people have less chance to stare. I changed the serpentine belt a little while ago and a couple of the pulleys for good measure, but alas I now have this noise coming from this area which I can't fully locate, I had a problem with the power steering return line dripping last week, which I fixed but I can't see them being related.
Are there any little tricks that I can do to narrow down the area, or is there anybody that has had this problem and point their wisdom finger at the culprit? I would once again be incredibly grateful to the members of this forum. Thanks if you so much if you have the time and can help me out, Paul.

I've had the alternator make some squealing in my GMC truck when it was struggling under load like having the ac on. The belt was slipping a bit on the pulley. Clean and tighten your alternator and battery connections.

Turns out my alternator was bad from charging damaged batteries.

Assuming it's not a squeaky pulley:

Squeaky belts are common. Oils and anti-freeze on them can be a real issue.. anti-freeze may be the worse. I've personally found belt-dressings make it worse... and once a belt starts squeaking, they are usually finished. You can try cleaning the belt (both sides) and ALL the pulleys.. and maybe you'll get lucky.

I've also found that even the quality name-brand belts like Gates etc, can still squeak. The only belt I've ever used that doesn't squeak is Gatorbelt.. but they are no longer made. The secret is the cross-hatch pattern. Continental picked up the product in their "Elite" series.. also discontinued. They can still be found on Ebay.

Old belt (shiny and slippery):

Like MM said, the Gatorback belt is the ONLY belt I've ever installed that didn't squeal under load. Continental bought them and produced the right belt briefly, then decided it was more expensive to produce or something and went back to their old design.

I've got 2 actual Gatorback belts on the shelf and I'm hoping that's enough. The one on my '02 was 8 years old when I bought my '05 and parked it and it still didn't show any stretch nor had ever squealed or squeaked.

Thanks all, I really appreciate it Mmusicman I read that info on this site previously. Thanks all of you for taking the time to input the information, I for one appreciate it. I am thinking it could be the AC thing at the top right near the steering fluid tank ,is that the compressor?. I am thinking this because it has a slight grinding sound too. I have done various things that would normally cause extra load or tension on the belt, to see when it is most prominent including turning on the AC, however there is no gas in it for it to start up. It doesn't screech like a slipping belt as suck but squeaks with no set pattern at idle. I have ordered an AC bypass pulley from Amazon and I am still waiting for it. I am going to heed all of your advice and check the belt again. Thanks again.
