Let's Look at My Spider and Intake Stuff

Let's Look at My Spider and Intake Stuff

Postby Sparkydog [OP] » September 29th 2020, 3:36pm

Do I have the good spider? Is it normal for the intake plenum to have this much oily goo coating everything? Should I do anything more than clean up all the parts and put them back together?

Can't tell if a spider is good simply by "looking at it".
If it develops problems.. you'll usually KNOW it!

Your intake looks nice however... :D
Oily-goo.. I'm not sure...

If the regulator is leaking.. that would be detected in a pressure leak-down test.
Someone else may be able to offer more on the photos..?

I meant "Is this the preferred style of spider? Do I need to upgrade?"

03-05 had the better version stock. So yes it is the version you want. No idea on the goo either.

Oily goo is okay/ normal, when you see a clean spot that's when you have something leaking.

Actually, 02-05 has the MFI spider installed from the factory, so yes, you have the 'good' version.

The plenum doesn't look bad at all. Oily (actually, carbon from combustion plus a little gas) goo is normal unless it's excessive.

The plenum on my '02 (also MFI) looked far, far worse than that when the #4 injector failed electrically (the wire burned):

The '05 wasn't as nasty as the '02, but there are clear washed and dirty areas from leaking injectors:

This is the underside of the throttle body on the '02 - definitely worse than yours:

So I say, clean everything and reinstall. Though you can plug the spider back in and energize the injectors with a scan tool to see if anything's dribbling.
