2000 Chevy Astro No Fuel Pressure

Got a 2000 Astro for free, and initially had it running. Replaced fuel pump relay after jumping the battery and it ran. Ran for about 25 minutes after being helped with starting fluid and then died. Wouldn't start at all. Low fuel pressure at all times (koeo, cranking etc all about 30 psi) Figured I'd replace the fuel filter and go from there. New fuel filter brought me down to 10 PSI primed and cranking and eventually rose to about 20ish. Figured fuel pump so went ahead and knocked that out. Still 20ish PSI at Schrader valve when cranking. Codes are P0200 and P101. Confused because Schrader valve is before fuel regulator but I have no idea what could be causing this issue. Any help is appreciated.

If you are getting good power to the new pump and still no pressure then it's probably the regulator.

A fuel pump sitting in fuel will only create flow, needs to have a restriction to build any useful pressure. That restriction comes from the fuel pressure regulator. Engage the pump and gently pinch off a return hose to see if it starts to build pressure, watch your gauge and don't let it get above 70psi while testing.

Not that I know much about this fuel system but the regulator is after the rail, is it not? Most of the cars I've worked on have the regulator are inline or attached to the tank. Also, is it possible this is causing the codes as well?

It's in the plenum, part of the injection spider assembly. It's job is to hold back ~60psi of fuel, letting anything above that flow back to the tank through the return lines.

If that is confirmed to be your issue, I would replace the entire spider assembly while you are in there with the newer style injectors instead of poppet valves https://amzn.to/3eUpQSg
I would also replace the lower intake manifold gasket if it hasn't been replaced already, they are virtually guaranteed to eventually leak. Better than going in there twice. https://amzn.to/38u45Y3

i tried to get the gm tech downloaded to an iMac awhile back but all i got was malware (sounds like a t-shirt). i need to try this again.

thanks Leeann, i'll try again. it sounds like you get a whole library of stuff with the download. i've acquired the '98 & '99 paper copies of the M/L manuals, but the 2000 thru 2005 hardcopies are still pretty expensive.

Just a heads up but I will be finally tackling this thing this week. Compared to clutch replacements and jeep heater cores this is a cake walk. Pump is priming so I know it is getting good power and fuel filter is new. Found the spider unit online but wasn’t sure which units to avoid?
