Oil Cooler Delete

Postby grandamle91 [OP] » January 6th 2013, 8:00pm

I took off the oil cooler adapter off and put the oil filter bolt on the engine block but its not long enough to connect the oil filter. Am I missing something?

I just deleted my oil cooler lines and when I tried to install a new oil filter it could not reach the threads. I happened to try the old Pennzoil PF-9A filter and that was the only one (tried many different brands) which had its threads closer to the end. I went to a local Pennzoil lube place and they sold me one. I actually got the longer filter that matched the older, early 90's Astros so it is easier to wrench in. I am going to look for a replacement threaded tube from the early 90's model years. Has anyone else had this issue of filters not being able to be threaded on? I have it the long side stick out so it is not inserted incorrectly.

In the pic above, you need to remove the center threaded piece from the adapter block and thread it into the engine.

That’s what the allen on the ratchet is for. Until you put that threaded piece into the engine, no filter will thread on.

Engine side should look like this - make sure you get the old o-ring out of the way:

I followed the instructions in the post you referenced. Do you think the threaded adapter is different (longer) in the previous version van (85-94)? Mine is a 2002 AWD. Thanks!
