14 MPG ? ?

14 MPG ? ?

Postby smokinjoe [OP] » June 27th 2013, 3:46pm

So on my 2 last NYC->NH trips,(300mi ea way), I calculated my fuel use at 14mpg.
I have a stock 1995 2wd so was expecting higher. Does this sound normal and what could I do to improve efficiency?

I tend to cruise at @ 74-75mph. (but you didnt hear that from me)

Can I borrow your durango? (lol)

Randy, what do I swap out to fix it? Spider? It has new dist cap & wires, new plugs & O2 snsor. Blocking the egr would only make it worse right?

Well, I'm jealous.

*Properly inflate your tires

*Make sure the air filter and MAF are clean

*Replace worn shocks (the more bounce the more momentum you loose)

*Replace stock CAT for a high flow (CAT could even be melted or plugged up)

*Maybe install a throttle body spacer (check to be sure the TB is clean and valve is snappy)

*Clean the fins on your radiator and replace the fluid

*Clean the EGR valve and replace the PCV valve

*Clean/regap your spark plugs or replace them

*Make sure you TCC is locking up

*Loose any extra crap you don't need

*DRIVE SLOWER

Blocking the EGR should increase mileage. Re-set the timing with a programmer.
Putting in a spider is not that hard. Top part/cover of the manifold just got to come off.

If the spider is leaking/malfunctioning yes it will help dramatically. And looking good racing the bike in your pics.

Shoot, I do better than that with an AWD. I get 17-18 hwy, depending on the hills, going 75-80 (shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh), and that's from MD to northern CT and back.

Tuneup with AC Delco plugs, cap & rotor and Autolite Professional wires if that's not what you used.

Clean IAC and EGR.

Replace thermostat with an AC Delco (or drill a tiny hole in a Stant).

Check/replace the coolant temp sensor for the computer.

Check the intake air temperature sensor (caused a 1-2 mpg drop on my Bravada with 4.3).

Replace every vacuum line you can find, especially the hard plastic one that crosses the motor.

I run my LT tires at 38 psi, a bit higher than the door sticker. Better feel for driving and slightly better mileage.

Thanks for the replies everyone. That should keep me busy for a minute. Its hard to get wrenching time on the astro during race season (5 bikes to wrench on) but hope to do what I can.

To clarify (pardon the ignorance), PCV & IAC. What are & how to fix/replace? I cant seem to search it.

IAC is idle air control. It meters air into the intake to raise the idle to desired(by the computer)RPM. Located on the throttle body in the back on a TBI. On the intake in the front near the throttle body on CPI and newer engines.

PCV is positive crankcase ventilation. In a valve cover. It sucks out acids formed in the engine. When it is blocked open it sucks out oil vapor from the engine. Fouls plugs and acts like a vacuum leak

i get my best freeway mileage between 65-68, it seems to drop off at 70 and up. empty i average 19 mixed driving.

so like the others said, slow down, check tires etc.

i felt pretty good when i filled the tank this AM and got 14.4 with my regular 3/4 ton load of tool's.

My old 2000 was getting 16-17 mpg loaded & towing a motorcycle trailer 80-85 mph with A/C on. At the time I didn't think that was so good... but now I realize it probably was.

I just got back from taking my 2002 Astro AWD on it's first trip. 500+ round trip and averaged about 65 MPH (freeway and two lane roads). I got 18 MPG right on the nose! I am happy with that as my Expedition got a whopping 12-13 freeway. I would LOVER to get better mileage, and am going to try some of the suggestions on the board.

So what do you guys do to figure out miles per gallon? Old school, look at the tank and odomotor? Or is there something new and easier?

What the heck is a spider?? The fuel injectors?

I do it when I go on a long trip. Look at the mile marker when i get on the freeway. And as soon as I get off then fill it see what it takes. I am sure I am leaving out a couple miles that way. Close enough for gov work.

Yes a spider is the fuel injection in the manifold.

Anytime I put gasoline in the van, I fill it up and reset the trip odometer. I record the miles that I have driven since the last fill up and divide that by how many gallons I just put into the tank.
