4.3L stock rebuild

4.3L stock rebuild

Postby jbee [OP] » June 30th 2013, 8:59pm

My 90 Safari is getting close to 200k, and I was thinking that maybe it's time to start thinking about a rebuild. It also blows a little smoke right at start-up. Knowing what little I do, that tells me that it at least needs new rings. I was wondering if a rebuild was that much more $$ than a ring job. So, I would like to get some ideas about whether it makes sense to just do the rings or the full rebuild. What kind of prices are typical? I am not mechanical enough to do it, but I have as buddy (the van's former owner) who is. I don't want to do a V8 or modify it in any way, so just keep the ideas stock. Any tips, suggestions, warnings, etc, would be helpful. Thanks.

Just rings or a re-build. Rebuilding it is basically just having the crank turned that 150 bucks or so. The smoke on start up is valve guides. Which is not a problem really. New valve seals solves that. So if you dont have ridges at the top of the cylinders. I would doubt it mine looked good enough to use with just a hone at 225 thousand.

I think 5-600 bucks your looking at good as new if you do it yourself.

Crank kit, Upper and lower gasket kit, Rings. Lap the valves since they out for valve seals. Valve grind compound is like 6 bucks.

I would get the block washed and new cam bearings. No really necessary but a good idea. Washing the block cleans out the years of garbage in the lower cooling areas. And it will show imperfections you may want to correct. Erosion at the head. Maybe a slight mill. Hairline crack like I found after it was washed. Didn't show beforehand.

My six been re-built a while. Runs like a dream.

A Little Smoke at Start up Is Not That Big Of a Deal , I had That Issue with My 90' A lot Sooner Than That (around 60,000) Nothing ever came of it. Always Passed Emissions, Never lost any power, And put 100,000 more on it that way. If Its more than a puff at startup I would worry otherwise Keep Driving it , and put a v8 in when your Ready.
