car running better when on empty???

i have a 98 astro and i just noticed the other day i took a little road trip about 70 miles out and when i got there i was just about red lining on gas but i did notice that the van ran much better. it didnt shake and it ran great. once i put some gas in and i started it up it ran like crap all over again. what can this be??

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter. Some Lucas fuel system cleaner might help as well.
I replace the filter 1 a year and a bottle of Lucas in the spring and fall, in fact I just put a bottle in today.

i replaced it before the summer came so i doubt that the filter is bad. i also use lucas like 3 times a year.

Fuel pump pick-up is spring-loaded against the bottom of the tank. So regardless of empty or full, you are always pulling from the very bottom.
