sudden rough idle

sudden rough idle

Postby jamiejimbo622 [OP] » September 8th 2013, 12:24am

Afternoon, this is a great site here and I enjoy getting inspired at the ambitious projects,

Before any of that I got to figure out the rough idling that started out of nowhere. My 93 safari has gotten new plugs, wires and cap/rotor. Removed the egr to clean and no change at all apparently.

I did compression test reading 190 PSI on all six and while doing it noticed that the exhaust had been sheared off after muffler about 3 inches behind muffler and dangling free. I toyed with the idea back pressure would be compromised because theres still twists and bends that aren't on exhaust system any more but I don't know if thats true.

The exhaust will get welded or fitted back on but any one got an idea whats going on? Im not losing oil and minimal power loss but its very aggravating and concerning cause the van is still in use. Thanks yall

pvc valve line...not egr, sorry. ...mine popped off the front of the throttle body and the throttle body was just sucking air like crazy. vacuum leaks cause all kind of rough idle, especially if theyre big.

Well two nights ago the fan clutch assembly completely separated from the shaft and started clanging around. I thought dang that muffler must have a rock bouncing around in it but no. My gf who is clueless about cars but knows how to pay attention to these problems had me discover the fan and so I pulled it off and put on electric one in a jip thinking Ill drive down when its light out to junkyard.

I feel dumb again because I allowed the fan hub remain loose letting belt slip off as soon as I started it and all accessories belt driven quit. Drove at night about twenty minutes and found my stupid mistake in morning.

No local auto parts store had a stock fan so I reused the one I got as it wasn't that mangled and got to have something.

Any way what Im getting at is this is not a terribly uncommon problem, gf's father had same issue with his astro.

But now the idle sounds good, vibration is back to normal. Problem solved- it appeared to be caused by the separating of the fan clutch ***.

Thanks all
