Do all Astro fuel pumps whine?

Do all Astro fuel pumps whine?

Postby Woodweasel [OP] » September 29th 2009, 4:47pm

Why does the fuel pump have to be so damb noisy!? :screaming: I have a Flowmaster 40, which gives it a little rumble out the back, but I can still hear that stinkin pump whinin over it. The pump was replaced by the previous owner about 2 years ago at the dealer. His reason for having it replaced was it was making a "whining noise". I started paying attention when I would see another Astro drive by me, they all seem to have the same whine. So... I am going to "Assume" that this is an Astro thing and I better just get used to it????? :(

its actually more of a gm thing. they all do. the trucks are under the bed so the noise does not resonate in the cab. the tahoe and similar have alot of complex bends in the floor so the noise does not transfer as well either. the floor of the van is big and flat so its like an amplifier. just the design. is your pump less noisy when the tank is full?
Don't explain it poorly 5 times. Take the 15 seconds to go out and take a picture of it!!

Mine was replaced by a local Firestone store 6 months ago and it started whining last week. I assumed that they installed an el-cheapo fuel pump. I took it back to Firestone and I asked what brand they installed. They checked the computer and it was a Delphi that they bought at NAPA. They offered to replace it for $130 labor and no charge for the part. I'm not sure it it is worth the trouble. So... I feel ya.

In the bad fuel pump experiences that I have had the pump will be quiet then once driven a while(warms up) it will slowly get louder. One was so loud it sounded like a Semi Truck driving right next to me.
I can definatly hear both my Vans pumps running at idle, but once on the road I never hear them. Wife and kids whinning thats normal too!

The one that was in the Astro when I got it whined(unknown brand- likely Airtex), the one I replaced it with whines (Airtex- I didn't know better at the time).

The wife's 1995 Mercury Villager whined from the day we got it (used) in 2001, so I replaced it before a long trip in 2006. That one whines too (Another Airtex- see a pattern here?).

I think they all whine. Kinda sucks. Guess I need to stop whining now too.

Re: Do all Astro fuel pumps whine?

Hi Woodweasel

The whining you hear from the pump is not normal, no. Try replacing the fuel filter first if it hasn't been done recently to see if it makes any difference. If it doesn't, then be ready to replace the pump soon.

It shouldn't be laboring that hard continuously, and to hear it above your flowmaster 40 exhaust, means it really is working hard to keep the pressure up to the injectors. If it goes on like that for any length of time, it will eventually over heat the wiring harness (if it hasn't already).

Just a heads up on that one.:)

PS: And just so people know, these Astro/Safari pumps do not Inherently give off a "continuous" whine like that. I replaced my pump about 5 times already and neither of the new ones whined until they failed (then they Howled at moon). Use a "good" name brand pump (Delco/Delphi)- Good name brand fuel - Good (clean) plug-in connection to the pump (including the ground wire) - Replace the fuel filter every 3 or 4 months - Keep the fuel level at or above 1/3 of a tank. This will eliminate the fuel pump failure problem.
Just another heads up on this subject.:)

Thanks Guys!! Sounds like I should replace it (OH JOY!!). Yeah, this thing whines full tank, empty tank.... Sitting at a light, the sound bounces off the car next to me. Turn the key on, it starts, turn the key off and it runs for a half a second then stops.
Thanks again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
