Re: how to more hp ??

Postby chevymaher » April 15th 2014, 8:08pm

I ported the engine, heads intake and exhaust, and added a bigger cam. Easily doubled the horsepower. 150 HP Z vin to it got to be above 300 HP range. And that is being modest.
Don't got to go crazy like I did but there is extra power easily attained.

How much $ do you want to spend? I would put a remote mount turbo on it, supporting fuel system, and a tune. Make 300+ easy with about $2k in parts and some fab work.

wynjammer.com has a nice little supercharger for your tbi (vin z) 4.3
you can bolt that on in a weekend... or not ?
Not looking for that much power ?

Or you could buy a jet stage 1 chip & some liqui moly (mos2) oil additive for about the cost of a tank of gas ? ( I have the 25 gallon tank. )

I really like the better fuel mapping on the jet chip... mid range throttle response is way better, it even idles smoother.
The liqui moly oil additive will make that unbalanced engine so smooth you'll think it grew a balancing shaft over night !

The 8th character in the VIN tells what engine was originally installed in the vehicle. There are 5 different types of 4.3L fuel injection systems and 4 different types of engine control systems used on them.

The “Z” engine code, 1987 through 1995, uses Throttle Body Injection, (TBI) and OBDI engine controls. It uses two injectors mounted in the throttle body. The injectors alternate when firing. Each injector feeds every other cylinder in the firing order. With the engine running, fuel pressure must be 9psi to 13psi.

The “W” engine code, 1992 through mid 1995, uses Central Multiport Fuel Injection, (CMFI) and OBDI engine controls, (late 1995 engines are controlled by OBD1.5). Both systems use one centrally located injector inside the plenum. There are 6 fuel lines connected to the injector; at the other end of each line is a plastic nozzle with a spring loaded poppet valve. Each line is routed to a machined passage in the lower intake manifold that leads to the back side of the intake valve. The injector is “batch fired” meaning it feeds all cylinders simultaneously. Fuel pressure spec for 1992 through 1994 is 55psi to 61psi with the ignition in the RUN position, engine OFF, and the fuel pump running. It must remain above 50psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the fuel pump shuts off. Fuel pressure spec for late 1995's is 58psi to 64psi with the ignition in the RUN position, engine OFF, and the fuel pump running. It must remain above 53psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the fuel pump shuts off.

The “W” engine code on 1996 and newer uses Central Sequential Fuel Injection, (CSFI) controlled by OBDII engine controls. There are 6 injectors that are centrally located inside the plenum. There is a fuel line connected to each injector; at the other end of each line is a plastic nozzle with a spring loaded poppet valve. Each line is routed to a machined passage in the lower intake manifold that leads to the back side of the intake valve. The injectors are fired sequentially, just like the firing order of the engine. With the ignition in the RUN position, engine OFF, and the fuel pump running, fuel pressure must be 60psi to 66psi and must remain above 55psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the fuel pump shuts off.

The “X” engine code was available starting in 1999. It uses Multiport Fuel Injection, (MFI) controlled by OBDII engine controls. This system is nearly identical to the CSFI system both in appearance and operation. It has one substantial improvement inside the plenum. The poppet valves were eliminated and the injectors were relocated out to the machined passages in the lower intake manifold. The injectors are fired sequentially, just like the firing order of the engine. With the ignition in the RUN position, engine OFF, and the fuel pump running, fuel pressure must be 60psi to 66psi and must remain above 55psi for 3 to 5 minutes after the fuel pump shuts off.

I'll be the first to say... Don't destroy your engine ! :naughty:
The rest of the gang did such a nice job explaining the vin thing,
I get to tell you more about the jet stage 1 chip...

Jet performance products, Inc.
17491 Apex Circle
Huntington Beach, CA 92647
Tech Line (714) 848-5515
http://www.jetchip.com

The jet stage 1 chip (part # 28809) is for stock (unmodified) engines.
The gains are just enough to transform a boring ride into a fun & peppy little machine !
If you tow or haul things in your van, the jet stage 1 chip will give you way better mileage than the factory tuning. Mileage should be about the same or a couple extra mpgs for everyday light use.

They put a van like ours on a dyno and mapped the air fuel ratios at all rpms and load conditions. Their goal was to make best power on low octane or mid grade fuel. They advanced the timing (89 octane fuel is best) and increased the injector pulse width (added more fuel) where it was formerly running too lean. Then they put it on an actual chip that goes into your ecm... (it replaces the factory chip)
Your ecm should be in an aluminum box on the passenger side under the kick panel.

I like jet performance products & Jet's tech support line is one of the best... :2:

You may be better off sending and e mail to TBIchips.com the guys name is Brian Harris and he does a lot of custom chips for our type engines and fuel systems. He can custom make a chip for the 95 octane too. Mark

The jet stage 1 chip really only needs 89 octane or a little bit better...

95 octane at the pump in Norway ?
wow... A custom tune will be better for taking advantage of your high test fuel !
Depending on the cost ?
I think the best we have in the states is 92 octane...
without buying specialty fuels. :shifty:

95 octane is the common one can get 98 and even 102 some places . And we use e85 for high hp engines :-) the price is just over 10 $ pr gallon for the cheap 95 octane :p
