Oil

Oil

Postby alexalexanders [OP] » December 7th 2009, 1:18am

I was wondering about changing oil. My 94 astro has 80k on it. It has always had castrol 5w30 oil in it. I was wondering if it would be a bad idea to change to castrol synthetic and run a ac delco filter. Basicly i want to drive my van forever(hopefully) and looking for best maintance possible. My oil changes will be every 3k high mileage or synthetic

If you have no complaints with the engine, I would keep using the oil that has been used in it. Just keep up on the maintenance and you'll be good.

I use synthetic in everything. I have only a problem switching brands of oil. If you're not leaking or burning oil you won't go wrong switching to the castrol synthetic 5w30. Then you might be able to stretch your change intervals to 5-6k.

Castrol Syntec is a base III hydroisomerized mineral oil, in other words it's not really synthetic, and it's only in the US that it's allowed to be sold as such. Most "synthetic" oils are made this way now, (because it's much cheaper). A better oil is Mobil 1 or Amsoil which are true synthetic polyalphaolefins, or better yet, Royal Purple or Redline. If you are going to change it every 3000 there isn't much point using sythetics because their big advantage cost-wise is longer drain intervals.

Thanks for the replies, i kinda thought that sticking to what its had would be best. I thimk synthetic would be a waste of money since i only go 3k.

Definatly stick with what is working for you & if your not using the PF52 Delco Filter I would as it suppose to be better then FRAM & my Safari oil pressure gauge is more steady with it. My gauge might just be sensitive though.
