Number 5 and 6 rod bearings were both toast. The noise was apparently the rod ends hitting the pan.

Crazy!

Hope to get the van back tomorrow.

I know this is a very old thread but I am looking at a second van for the wifey. It's a 97 GMC AWD safari. It's super clean and solid driving. But when I get on the accelerator a little more than needed. I get a deep knock. I'm expecting an issue with a spin bearing but I'm seeing how worth while this fix would be. I'm getting the truck (177k on it) for $1000. What was your fix to make it run and how much did that cost you? I'm trying to see if the sale is worth it.

I just spun a bearing in mine, I'm freshening up a junkyard 350 for it now. Once a bearing spins, you're looking at a crankshaft kit at the very least. Even then, you now have a good crank in an old engine. That's why I tore into the JY engine I just got. I'll know what's in it is good, tight, and new.

VanDan,
I went with a rebuilt Motor from ATK, here is the thread;

viewtopic.php?f=43&t=53298

Would much rather have replaced it myself, but my schedule and circumstances (1,500 miles away from home with only basic tools and no facility) made it necessary.

Imho for the price of a remanufactured motor, you can have a worthwhile van I feel you bought it for a grand... but talk him down If you can.

Also, I just returned from a nearly9,000 mile road trip yesterday and the new motor is going strong (about 40k since replacement).
