Problems and more problems, cranks but won't start

Postby 0dysseus [OP] » June 15th 2014, 3:05pm

Hey guys. I've had a major pain in the butt with this Van over the last month. Its a 98 RWD, with 110,000 miles. After many little things that had to be done (i picked it up cheap about 4 months ago), I had recently had fuel delivery problem while driving from FL to MA, where it crapped out on me while driving, after the next 3-4 times of this happening (always while driving and then starting up again 3-12 hours afterwards like nothing was wrong), i had a mechanic test the fuel pressure which in the diagnosis had dropped from 55 to 30, i said thanks, during the night i started it up and drove it to autozone, bought a fuel pump and put it in, problem fixed for the next 1000 miles. Now, it rained last night, it was a damp morning, i'm about to go to the beach and slam, it turns over but then immediately, rumbles and quits. This has never happened before even with the fuel pump issue- I'm really confused, what the hell is going on here? Thanks for your time, all comments sincerely appreciated

could be the connection behind the battery that is getting shorted due to the moisture in the air, it's one of the weird trouble spots electrically. If it ran great after the fuel pump, then you are having problems when the moisture level rises, then you have a problem with a connection somewhere. One thing to check would be to do a resistance check on the coil, just to rule that out.
A temporary fix usually becomes a permanent solution, therefore it does not exist.

My 99 GMC Safari has been doing the same thing....all winter it was fine, now rain, humidity etc. Gonna check the distributor cap and rotor for moisture, then the coil....

I've had similar issues a few times… Sounds like no spark….
The ignition system is prone to moisture. Last time for me, it was the coil shorting out after a rain.
a new coil helped…. new plug wires and plugs really helped, better starts, better MPG, more power and smoother idle.
While you're in there, cap and rotor is always a good idea.

Went to local NAPA and picked up new cap and rotor. Said there is a TSB regarding issues. One is A/C line runs over distributor and condensates, introducing moisture. Also, drill out weep ports in distributor as they become clogged.

Does it want to start if you spray go juice (ether) down the intake ?

No go on the cap, rotor, or coil. Is there a ground for the injectors? It acts like a loose ground....maybe?

Odesseus,

A bunch of good advice so far... the harness area behind the battery, the cap n' rotor, plug wires, ignition circuit.

Are you dead sure it was due to the moisture? Have you tried starting the van after some dryer weather?
You could always run around with a blow torch or hair dryer and try removing moisture and see if that helps.
Or alternately, run around with a spray bottle and see if moisture stops your van from running.

Otherwise,
did the rain run into your tank? (poor gas quality, try starter fluid right down the intake tube)
is there spark? (put a timing light on the main wire to the distributor)
is there air flow? (both input and output/exhaust)
is the engine mechanically ok? (compression check, any funky noises? low on coolant? )
